The (USA) Principal, Software Engineer leads the design and delivery of scalable platform capabilities, driving cloud-native architecture and AI/ML integration across multiple teams. This role oversees the full software development lifecycle, ensuring high availability, reliability, and performance of distributed systems. The position requires strategic technical leadership, mentorship, and collaboration with cross-functional stakeholders to align engineering efforts with business objectives. The Principal Engineer champions innovation, continuous improvement, and operational excellence while maintaining architectural integrity and fostering knowledge sharing within the organization.
About the team:
The Global Integrated Fulfillment (GIF) team develops and maintains backend systems supporting critical in-store fulfillment workflows such as picking, storage, audit, and dispense. Focused on scalability, reliability, and operational efficiency, the team manages complex distributed workflows with deep platform integration. This engineering environment directly impacts store operations and customer experience. The team is suited for engineers skilled in navigating ambiguity, understanding complex problem spaces, and delivering practical, scalable solutions that enhance Walmart’s eCommerce fulfillment capabilities worldwide.
What you'll do:
  • Lead platform engineering efforts to deliver scalable infrastructure, reusable tooling, and advanced ML frameworks aligned with strategic roadmaps.
  • Architect and implement cloud-native, distributed systems ensuring high availability, fault tolerance, and real-time data processing capabilities.
  • Oversee full software development lifecycle including coding, testing, deployment, monitoring, and incident response across multiple teams.
  • Integrate AI/ML technologies into software products to enhance customer and associate experiences.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and promote engineering best practices across teams.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to translate business needs into clear technical requirements and measurable success metrics.
  • Drive continuous improvement through innovation, knowledge sharing, and adoption of modern development tools.

What you'll bring:
  • Extensive experience leading platform engineering initiatives, including shared infrastructure and scalable ML frameworks.
  • Proven expertise in cloud-native architecture and distributed system design ensuring high availability and fault tolerance.
  • Strong technical proficiency in software development lifecycle, CI/CD pipelines, and observability practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to architect AI/ML integrated applications using languages such as Python and Java.
  • Skilled in applying model-driven design and leveraging modern development tools to enhance quality and velocity.
  • Effective mentor and technical leader fostering engineering excellence and innovation across teams.
  • Excellent collaboration skills with cross-functional stakeholders to translate business needs into technical solutions.

The annual salary range for this position is $110,000.00 - $220,000.00 Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses. Additional compensation for certain positions may also include :
