Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Electrical Engineer to provide expert technical leadership and contribute to the delivery of industrial design projects across the chemical, power, utilities, and manufacturing sectors. This role involves designing and retrofitting industrial power distribution systems and substations, performing complex electrical studies, and mentoring junior engineers. The ideal candidate will bring deep technical expertise, strong communication skills, and a passion for driving innovation in electrical engineering practices.

Preferred locations include Wadsworth, OH; Columbus, OH; Pittsburgh, PA; Philadelphia, PA. Other CDM Smith U.S. locations may be considered based on candidate qualifications.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and mentor a team of electrical engineers on industrial design projects.
  • Design and retrofit industrial power distribution systems and substations.
  • Create complex electrical system designs including master plans, protection and generation models, and renewable energy systems.
  • Conduct power system studies and electrical calculations for lighting, communications, fire alarm, and security systems.
  • Perform site reviews and update design requirements based on field conditions.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and firm policies.
  • Develop white papers and technical documentation for internal knowledge sharing and external publication.
  • Collaborate with sales teams to develop proposals in response to RFPs.
  • Meet with clients to understand design needs and provide technical guidance.
  • Attend industry conferences and symposia to represent the firm and enhance visibility.
  • Provide detailed engineering estimates and maintain project budgets and schedules.
  • Supervise and review the work of junior engineers.
  • Support FEL and FEED delivery processes and design-build methodologies.
  • Contribute to the firm’s Technical Knowledge Management (TKM) initiatives.
  • Assist in obtaining multi-state licensing as needed.
Skills & Abilities
  • Expert knowledge of electrical design principles, power system analysis tools (e.g., SKM Power Tools, ETAP), and CADD 3D/4D software.
  • Strong understanding of NEC, NFPA, NESC, IEEE, UFC, and other industry standards.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, etc.).
  • Ability to supervise, estimate, and manage complex engineering projects.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Electronic Engineering, or Electrical Technology or related discipline.
  • Professional engineering (PE) license.
  • 7 years of related experience.
  • Domestic and/or international travel may be required. The frequency of travel is contingent on specific duties, responsibilities, and the essential functions of the position, which may vary depending on workload and project demands.
  • Equivalent additional directly related experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Proven experience leading industrial electrical engineering teams.
  • Familiarity with FEL and FEED delivery processes.
  • Experience with progressive design-build and design-build delivery methods.
  • Ability to obtain multi-state licensing.
  • Experience designing medium and low-voltage power systems for water, wastewater, federal, and transit facilities.

Additional Pay Range Information

CDM Smith is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. This pay range is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels for the geographic location assigned to the position. In addition to geographic location, a candidate’s salary is determined by several other factors including, but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, relevant work experience, skills, required certifications, and education/training.

Additional Compensation

All bonuses at CDM Smith are discretionary and may or may not apply to this position.
