What are physics internships?

Physics internships are temporary, often short-term positions that allow students or recent graduates to gain practical experience in the field of physics. These internships can take place in academic research labs, government agencies, or private companies and often involve hands-on work, data analysis, or assisting with experiments. Participating in a physics internship helps students apply classroom knowledge to real-world problems, develop professional skills, and build a network within the scientific community.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a Physics Internship, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Physics Internship, you need a solid grounding in physics concepts, analytical thinking, and typically be enrolled in or have completed relevant undergraduate coursework. Familiarity with data analysis software (such as MATLAB or Python), laboratory equipment, and sometimes simulation tools is often required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help interns collaborate and contribute to research teams. These skills ensure that interns can support projects, analyze results accurately, and grow as valuable contributors in scientific environments.

What is the difference between Internship Physics Internships vs Physics Research Assistant?

AspectInternship Physics InternshipsPhysics Research Assistant

Internship Physics Internships are typically short-term, educational opportunities for students or recent graduates to gain practical experience. Physics Research Assistants are more involved in ongoing research projects, often requiring advanced knowledge and contributing to scientific studies. Both roles are valuable for building a physics career but differ mainly in experience level and scope of responsibilities.

What kinds of projects or tasks can I expect to work on during a physics internship?

As a physics intern, you can expect to support ongoing research or applied projects, often working alongside experienced physicists and research staff. Your daily tasks may include data collection and analysis, running experiments, assisting with laboratory equipment, or contributing to computational modeling. The specific projects will depend on the organization's focus—whether it’s in academia, industry, or government—but you’ll gain valuable hands-on experience and exposure to real-world applications of physics. Collaboration with other interns and team members is common, and you may have opportunities to present your findings or contribute to publications.

What it's like to work at Elve
We are a small team (for now!) on a mission to bring the next generation of high-speed wireless connectivity to a billion people worldwide. That kind of impact is not going to be achieved with incremental improvements - we are enabling orders of magnitude advances in production capability, cost, size, and power in the mm-wave RF amplifier market. We ask "dumb" questions all the time because we always have something to learn. We work really hard, make sure to get good sleep, handle conflict intentionally, and expect great things from each other.
