Our propulsion systems are enabling new capabilities across defense, aerospace, and commercial applications. Through innovative engine architecture and cutting-edge engineering, LiquidPiston is redefining what is possible in power generation and propulsion.
Position Overview:
LiquidPiston is seeking a motivated and technically curious Engine Performance Intern to join our engineering team. This internship provides a unique opportunity to work alongside experienced engineers developing next-generation rotary engines and propulsion systems. The selected candidate will support engine testing, performance analysis, calibration activities, and data-driven development efforts to improve engine efficiency, durability, emissions, and overall system performance.
The ideal candidate has a strong foundation in thermodynamics, combustion, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics and enjoys turning test data into actionable engineering insights. You are analytical, detail-oriented, and eager to apply classroom knowledge to real-world engine development challenges in a fast-paced R&D environment.
You are currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or a related field and have a passion for internal combustion engines, propulsion systems, and experimental testing.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist in planning, executing, and monitoring engine performance tests in laboratory and test cell environments
  • Analyze engine test data to evaluate performance metrics such as power output, fuel consumption, thermal efficiency, combustion characteristics, and emissions
  • Support calibration and optimization activities for engine control systems and operating parameters
  • Develop data visualization tools, reports, and presentations to communicate test results and engineering recommendations
  • Collaborate with design, controls, simulation, and test engineers to investigate performance issues and support product development efforts
  • Assist with instrumentation setup, sensor validation, data acquisition, and troubleshooting activities
  • Document test procedures, results, and technical findings in engineering reports
Preferred Skills and Experience:
  • Coursework or project experience in thermodynamics, internal combustion engines, combustion, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer
  • Familiarity with engine testing, dynamometer operation, data acquisition systems, or laboratory testing environments
  • Experience using MATLAB, Python, Excel, LabVIEW, or similar data analysis tools
  • Understanding of engine performance metrics, combustion processes, and emissions fundamentals
  • Familiarity with controls, calibration, or model-based development tools such as Simulink is a plus
  • Experience with statistical analysis and large data set processing
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Participation in Formula SAE, Baja SAE, EcoCAR, Engine Design Competitions, research projects, or other hands-on engineering activities is highly desirable
