Internship Pattern Designer information

What does an internship pattern designer do?

An internship pattern designer assists in creating templates or blueprints for clothing or textiles, working closely with senior designers and production teams. Their tasks often include drafting patterns, adjusting designs based on feedback, and learning about the technical side of pattern making. Interns gain hands-on experience with industry tools and software, while also contributing to fittings and sample production. This role helps develop both creative and technical skills necessary for a career in fashion or textile design.

What are some common challenges faced during an internship as a pattern designer, and how can they be overcome?

Internship Pattern Designers often encounter challenges such as adapting to new software tools, understanding varying design specifications, and collaborating effectively with experienced designers. It's common to feel overwhelmed at first by the pace of production or the need to quickly iterate on patterns based on feedback. Overcoming these challenges involves proactive communication, seeking feedback regularly, and taking initiative to practice with industry-standard software. Building strong relationships with mentors and team members can also help interns gain valuable insights and accelerate their learning curve.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship pattern designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship Pattern Designer, you need a solid understanding of garment construction, textile properties, and pattern drafting, often gained through fashion design coursework or a related diploma. Familiarity with industry-standard software such as Adobe Illustrator, Gerber, or CLO 3D is highly valuable. Attention to detail, creativity, and strong communication skills help interns effectively collaborate with design teams and translate ideas into workable patterns. These skills ensure accurate, innovative designs that meet both aesthetic and functional requirements in the fashion industry.

What is the difference between Internship Pattern Designer vs Pattern Maker?

AspectInternship Pattern DesignerPattern Maker
CredentialsBasic fashion design or pattern drafting courses, internship experienceTechnical pattern drafting skills, experience in garment construction
Work EnvironmentDesign studios, fashion houses, internshipsManufacturing units, tailoring shops, production facilities
Industry UsageFashion design, apparel developmentGarment production, sample creation

While both roles involve pattern work, an Internship Pattern Designer focuses on learning and assisting in designing patterns during an internship, whereas a Pattern Maker is responsible for creating precise patterns for production. The internship role is more educational, while the pattern maker role is more technical and production-oriented.

Job description

We are seeking an Associate Engineer to join the Money Movement team within the Enterprise Payments & Money Movement portfolio. We are looking for someone with a strong growth mindset who is curious, eager to learn, and motivated to continuously develop their skills. You will work alongside experienced engineers to design, build, test, and support modern applications using technologies such as Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs, Kafka, event-driven architectures, and CI/CD practices. The ideal candidate brings tenacity and drive, embraces feedback, asks questions, learns from challenges, and is willing to step outside their comfort zone to grow. We are especially interested in candidates who are passionate about AI, have experimented with AI-assisted development tools, and are excited to explore how AI can improve the way software is designed, built, tested, and supported. While foundational technical skills are important, we place a strong emphasis on learning ability, initiative, curiosity, and the determination to grow into a strong engineer.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Designing Software

  • Apply foundational technical knowledge while working with other engineers to deliver high-quality solutions and business outcomes.
  • Participate in software design, development, testing, and implementation within the team.
  • Collaboratively problem solve, ask questions, and seek guidance when needed while building the ability to work more independently over time.
  • Demonstrate curiosity and persistence when working through unfamiliar or challenging technical problems.

Developing Software

  • Develop, test, and maintain software alongside other engineers using modern engineering practices.
  • Build experience with technologies such as Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs, Kafka, event-driven architectures, databases, and CI/CD.
  • Contribute to code reviews and learn to apply team engineering standards and patterns.
  • Take ownership of assigned work and demonstrate tenacity in driving problems through to resolution.

Learning and Applying New Techniques

  • Demonstrate a strong growth mindset and actively seek opportunities to learn new technologies, engineering practices, and approaches.
  • Actively explore and apply AI-assisted development tools to support learning, problem solving, software development, testing, documentation, and troubleshooting.
  • Develop the ability to effectively prompt, evaluate, and validate AI-generated solutions rather than relying on AI output without understanding it.
  • Experiment with emerging AI capabilities and share useful techniques, successes, and learnings with the team.
  • Seek and apply feedback from teammates and experienced engineers to continuously improve technical skills.
  • Share learnings, ideas, and discoveries with the team.

DevOps

  • Learn and apply CI/CD, observability, monitoring, and automated testing practices.
  • Participate in the team support rotation and continuously build knowledge of the team's systems and capabilities.
  • Learn from production issues and use those experiences to improve software quality, resiliency, and supportability.

Models Thrivent's leadership competencies: courage, collaboration, and commitment by demonstrating resiliency, working together to make the best decisions, and holding yourself and others accountable.

Supports and/or develops an environment in which Thrivent employees and colleagues are focused on continuous improvement, exceptional employee engagement, and an unwavering commitment to our clients. Shapes and/or supports a culture that represents the Thrivent purpose, promise, and values, ensuring that Thrivent's trust and reputation remain strong with its clients.

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or other technical field or equivalent work experience.
  • 0 to 2 years of application engineering experience.
  • Foundational understanding of at least one programming language and software development concepts.
  • Demonstrated curiosity, initiative, and willingness to continuously learn and develop new technical skills.
  • Ability to collaboratively problem solve and demonstrate persistence when working through unfamiliar challenges.
  • Willingness to seek, receive, and apply feedback as part of continued growth.
  • Knowledge of version control practices and software development lifecycle concepts.
  • Foundational understanding of software design, databases, and application development.

Preferred

  • Exposure to Java and Spring Boot through professional experience, internships, coursework, or personal projects.
  • Exposure to REST APIs, Kafka, event-driven architectures, cloud technologies, or CI/CD practices.
  • Experience experimenting with AI and AI-assisted development tools through coursework, personal projects, internships, or professional experience.
  • Demonstrated curiosity about AI and an interest in applying it throughout the software development lifecycle.
  • Experience using AI to accelerate learning and problem solving while demonstrating the ability to understand, evaluate, and validate generated solutions.
  • Personal projects, internships, coursework, open-source contributions, or other examples demonstrating curiosity and continued technical learning.
