Internship Pandas information

What is an internship pandas?

Internship Pandas typically refers to internship positions focused on working with the Python Pandas library, which is a powerful tool for data manipulation and analysis. Interns in these roles often assist with data cleaning, processing, and analysis tasks using Pandas, and may contribute to projects involving data science or data engineering. These internships are ideal for students or recent graduates looking to gain hands-on experience with real-world data and develop their Python programming skills.

What types of projects might I work on during an internship focused on Pandas in a data science team?

As an intern specializing in Pandas within a data science team, you can expect to be involved in tasks such as cleaning and preprocessing raw datasets, performing exploratory data analysis, and creating data visualizations to uncover trends. You may assist with building data pipelines or automating repetitive data manipulation tasks using Pandas. Collaboration with data scientists and analysts is common, as you'll often support ongoing projects and contribute to team discussions about data-driven insights. This hands-on experience is a great way to build technical skills and understand real-world data workflows.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship pandas, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Pandas internship, you need foundational knowledge of data analysis, Python programming, and a basic understanding of statistics, often supported by coursework or self-directed learning. Familiarity with the Pandas library, Jupyter Notebooks, and version control systems like Git is typically expected. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and the ability to communicate findings clearly help interns stand out. These skills are crucial for efficiently handling data tasks, collaborating with team members, and delivering meaningful insights in a real-world data environment.

This role will focus on collecting, compiling, and/or sourcing data/information from multiple sources, transforming it into useable database(s).

The role will also provide an opportunity to gain an understanding of how data can be used across various cutting-edge tools used in the electric generation and transmission industry.

Projects:

  • Map Eastern Interconnection (EI) and Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC) Generation Interconnection Queues (GIQ) and transmission projects to raw source files.
  • Aggregate, map and process regional ISO/RTO queue filings, tracking project statuses (e.g., active, under study, withdrawn, operational) and Interconnection customer data.
  • Develop a change-set tracker to monitor changes in transmission object characteristics - Line Status, impedance, voltage  Magnitude, Bus Angle, etc.- between various study cases.

Assist in automating data extraction, web scraping, mapping, change-detection processes across all core interconnection projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Extract, update and validate electrical topology, system study cases and GIQ data.
  • Parse regional queue applications, commercial operation dates, capacity values, resource types (solar, wind, storage, thermal) to maintain a unified data pipeline.
  • Identify opportunities to automate data ingestion from grid operator portals (e.g., PJM, MISO, CAISO, SPP, ERCOT) and improve workflow efficiency. Maintain a systematic repository of data issues, study case mismatches, queue record discrepancies assisting in their resolution.

Maintain and query backend databases that feed key operational dashboards, interconnection cost models and transmission analytics.

  • Knowledge of power system modeling software such as PSSE/TARA, PROBE, or similar applications.
  • Understanding electric transmission networks or utility operations.
  • Experience with SQL databases and ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes.
  • Experience developing scripts or automating repetitive data processing tasks.
  • Familiarity with version control on large databases.
  • Experience creating dashboards or reports using Power BI, Tableau, or similar visualization tools.
