Job description

Description

The Contact Lens Supervisor is a hands-on clinical and operational leader within Optical Services. This individual performs advanced contact lens technician responsibilities while providing day-to-day supervision, training, mentoring, and workflow support for the contact lens team. The role is ideal for a contact lens professional who enjoys patient care, technical problem-solving, team development, and collaboration with providers.

In partnership with the Director of Optical Services, the Contact Lens Supervisor helps ensure consistent clinical quality, efficient workflows, accurate documentation and ordering, and a patient experience that reflects SPEC's GRACE Values and commitment to world-class care.ย 


Team Leadership and Staff Development

1. Provide day-to-day supervision, coaching, mentoring, and technical support to Contact Lens Technicians and Lab Technicians.

2. Assist with onboarding, training, and skill development for contact lens team members.

3. Model professional, patient-centered, and values-based leadership.

4. Participate in recruitment, onboarding, performance feedback, recognition, corrective action, and evaluation processes in partnership with the Director of Optical Services and Human Resources.

Workflow, Quality, and Patient Experience

1. Monitor contact lens orders, lab workflows, online ordering, patient notifications, and past-due orders.

2. Review documentation, charting, service charges, and related workflows for accuracy and consistency.

3. Assist with patient concerns or complaints related to contact lens services.

4. Identify opportunities to improve workflow, staffing, team communication, and patient experience.

Operational Support

1. Assist with scheduling templates, staffing coordination, timecard corrections, and approvals as delegated.

2. Travel between clinic locations as needed to support staff, monitor workflow, and promote consistency.

3. Partner with the Director of Optical Services to support department goals, team accountability, and operational effectiveness.

Requirements

Required Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent.

Minimum three years of optical or ophthalmic experience in a clinical setting.

Minimum three years of hands-on contact lens fitting experience.

Experience using slit lamp evaluation and keratometry in contact lens assessment.

Strong communication, organization, documentation, and patient service skills.

Ability to coach, mentor, and support team members.

Ability to work collaboratively with providers, technicians, lab staff, optical staff, and leadership.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience fitting RGP lenses.

Specialty lens or scleral lens experience preferred, but not required.

Previous supervisory, lead, training, or management experience.

ABO and/or NCLE certification.

Experience with contact lens ordering workflows, optical systems, and EHR documentation.

Certification and Professional Development

ABO and/or NCLE certification is preferred. SPEC supports continued professional development and may provide approved training materials and reimbursement for certification exam fees upon successful completion, consistent with company policy.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Working knowledge of contact lens optics, ocular anatomy, lens parameters, and measurement principles.

Skill in using contact lens fitting equipment, including slit lamp, keratometer, radius scope, lensometer, diagnostic contact lens sets, and related tools.

Ability to evaluate, adjust, and troubleshoot contact lens fit for comfort, vision, and clinical performance.

Ability to support accurate documentation, ordering, billing/service charge workflows, and patient communication.

Ability to communicate effectively with patients, providers, staff, and leadership.

Ability to maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and composure in a busy clinical environment.

Ability to learn and develop proficiency in scleral lens fitting through structured training and hands-on experience.
