Internship Operating Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Internship Operating Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship Operating Engineer, you need a foundational understanding of mechanical and electrical systems, safety protocols, and typically be pursuing or have a degree in engineering or a related technical field. Familiarity with building automation systems, HVAC controls, and maintenance management software is often expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication skills help interns excel in this hands-on environment. These skills ensure safe, efficient operation of building systems and support career development in facilities management.

What is the difference between Internship Operating Engineer vs Operating Engineer?

AspectInternship Operating EngineerOperating Engineer

The Internship Operating Engineer is an entry-level position designed for training and skill development, often part of an internship program. In contrast, the Operating Engineer is a fully qualified professional responsible for operating heavy machinery and managing equipment in various industrial settings. The internship provides foundational experience, while the operating engineer role involves independent work and greater responsibility.

What does an Internship Operating Engineer do?

An Internship Operating Engineer assists in the operation and maintenance of building systems, such as heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), electrical, and plumbing. Interns often work under the supervision of experienced engineers to learn how to monitor equipment, perform routine inspections, and troubleshoot issues. This role provides valuable hands-on experience in facility management and building operations, preparing interns for a career as a licensed Operating Engineer. Responsibilities may also include helping with repairs, maintaining logs, and ensuring safety protocols are followed.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on as an Internship Operating Engineer?

As an Internship Operating Engineer, you can expect to assist with the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of mechanical and electrical systems in facilities such as commercial buildings or industrial plants. Typical tasks may include monitoring equipment performance, conducting routine inspections, supporting preventive maintenance schedules, and helping diagnose system issues under the guidance of experienced engineers. You will likely collaborate closely with senior operating engineers, facility management teams, and vendors, gaining hands-on experience that is valuable for future full-time roles in building operations or plant engineering.

Duration
: 4-8 months (with potential extension up to 12+ months)
Compensation

Pathway
: Long-term internship extension or Full-time position based on performance

About NexScale

NexScale is an AI-native software company on a mission to extend human longevity by empowering wellness and fitness businesses with intelligent, human-centered AI.

Our flagship product, Chloe, is an AI Business Partner for boutique wellness and fitness studios. Chloe helps owners improve member retention, reduce burnout, and build stronger communities-by turning everyday operational data into proactive, empathetic actions.

We are not building another generic SaaS platform.
We are building agentic AI systems that reason, decide, and act inside real business operations-without increasing cognitive load for non-technical operators.

About This Internship

This is not a short-term, observational internship.

We intentionally design internships at NexScale as a talent pipeline for long-term contributors. This role is best suited for candidates who already have prior industry experience in software engineering and want to deepen their skills in AI-native, production-grade product development.

Exceptional performance during the internship may lead to:

  • A full-time role at NexScale, or
  • An extension of the internship for 12 months or longer, depending on mutual fit, funding structure, and team needs.
Who This Role Is For

This role is a strong fit if you:

  • Have hands-on software engineering experience in real codebases
(internships, co-ops, startups, research labs, or production teams)
  • Bring a strong AI foundation and interest in applied, product-embedded AI
  • Are comfortable using AI-assisted development tools to accelerate delivery
  • Care about building systems that create real business and human impact
  • Take ownership, communicate clearly, and follow through

You do not need to be senior.
You do need to be capable, curious, and accountable.

What You'll Work On

You will contribute directly to Chloe's Retention Intelligence Layer, helping transform fragmented data into clear insights and actions for studio owners.

Core Engineering
  • Build and ship features across NexScale's SaaS platform
  • Develop backend services, APIs, and data pipelines
  • Contribute to operator-facing dashboards and insights
  • Support integrations with CRM and studio management platforms
AI-Native Product Development
  • Implement AI-driven workflows, recommendations, and automations
  • Work with agentic patterns: triggers, decision logic, and feedback loops
  • Embed AI into real product experiences-not demos or experiments
Engineering Practice
  • Participate in code reviews, testing, and deployments
  • Write clean, maintainable, production-grade code
  • Balance speed with quality in a fast-moving environment
What Success Looks Like

By the end of the internship, a strong intern will have:

  • Shipped 1-2 production features used by real customers
  • Contributed meaningfully to an AI-driven workflow or insight
  • Worked within at least one real integration or data pipeline
  • Demonstrated strong ownership, judgment, and reliability
  • Shown readiness for expanded scope through full-time hiring or extended internship
Required Qualifications
  • Prior industry experience in software engineering (internships, co-ops, startups, or applied research)
  • Strong programming skills in Python and/or TypeScript/JavaScript
  • Experience with modern frameworks (e.g., React, Node.js, FastAPI)
  • Solid foundation in AI / LLM concepts
  • Fluent in using AI-assisted development tools responsibly
  • Eligible for Canadian internship grant programs (graduated not more than 2 years ago from a Canadian university)
  • Strong communication skills, attention to details and coachability
Nice to Have
  • Experience building LLM-based applications or agentic systems
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms like AWS
  • SaaS or customer-facing product experience
  • Interest in wellness, fitness, or retention-driven business models
Why NexScale
  • Work closely with a 3 experienced founder and a team of seasoned engineers, AI experts, and production-grade AI agents at a truly AI-native company based in Canada
  • Build applied, production-grade AI that is actively used by real customers-not demos or internal tools
  • Gain hands-on experience designing and shipping agentic AI systems in real business environments
  • See how your work directly impacts real businesses, real operators, and real communities
  • Join a high-bar team that values clarity, empathy, ownership, and execution over titles or bureaucracy
Final Note

We view internships as a two-way commitment.

When there is strong mutual fit and sustained impact, we prefer to extend and grow people rather than restart hiring. If you're looking for meaningful ownership, real responsibility, and a clear path forward-this role is designed for you.

Before You Apply

Attention to detail and operational excellence are essential to us. Please read the job posting carefully and submit:

  • Your resume, which must include a link to your LinkedIn profile
  • A short cover letter explaining why you are a strong fit for this role

Please note that we will only contact candidates who are selected to move forward to the next screening step.
