Job description

Structural Engineer

HED is looking to add an experienced team member to our group of talented Structural Engineers. The candidate should have broad structural design experience, with a focus on design and management of large, complex, and technical projects; and should be enthused about joining HEDโ€™s shared commitment to Advancing Your World through Critical Thinking, Integrated Practice, and Design Excellence.

About HED

We are a team that is full of ideas, experience, creativity, passionate opinions, insatiable curiosity, uncompromising integrity, commitment, and skill. Our culture is about aspiration, embracing change and challenges, listening to (and learning from) each other, encouraging continual learning, and inspiring collective growth. As an inclusive, integrated architecture and engineering practice, we value the diversity of perspectives, experiences, abilities, and expertise that advance both the work we do, and the world we share.

Position Summary

As a Structural Engineer III at HED, you are a licensed professional with 4โ€“8 years of experience, capable of taking a lead technical role on projects of increasing complexity and scope. With a deepening understanding of structural systems and interdisciplinary coordination, you apply strong engineering judgment, design acumen, and project experience to deliver resilient, code-compliant, and efficient structural solutions. You contribute to project execution, mentor junior staff, and help shape innovation and quality across the discipline. This role blends autonomy with collaboration, supporting HEDโ€™s mission to create a positive impact through design.

Essential Functions:

  • Lead the structural design and documentation for building projects of moderate to large complexity, ensuring technical excellence and coordination across disciplines.
  • Apply licensed engineering expertise to conduct structural analysis and design using tools such as RAM, RISA, ETABS, and Enercalc.
  • Develop and oversee the creation of detailed engineering drawings, specifications, calculations, and reports.
  • Serve as a technical resource within project teams, assisting in establishing design direction, solving engineering challenges, and delivering integrated solutions.
  • Coordinate closely with architects, MEP engineers, and civil consultants to ensure consistency and completeness of design across disciplines.
  • Participate in and sometimes lead design meetings, client presentations, and internal coordination sessions.
  • Perform construction administration duties including site visits, RFI and submittal responses, and field reports.
  • Research and implement applicable codes, regulations, and standards to ensure structural compliance and safety.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and best practices, including IBC, ASCE 7, ACI, AISC, NDS, and TMS.
  • Support quality assurance and quality control efforts, including the review of documentation prepared by junior team members.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to junior engineers, designers, and interns in design processes, tools, and career development.
  • Contribute to discipline-wide standards, tools, innovation initiatives, and research efforts.
  • Engage in HEDโ€™s DWP process by tracking time, delegating tasks, and managing junior staff workload.
  • Perform other ad hoc duties as assigned by the Discipline Leader or project lead.

Requirements

  • Bachelorโ€™s Degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Architectural Engineering or similar related field, from an ABET/EAC accredited institution.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE).
  • 4-8 years of structural engineering experience in a professional setting.
  • Proficiency in Revit (core) preferred.
  • Proficiency in structural analysis tools such as RAM, RISA, ETABS, Enercalc or similar required.
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable codes and standards (IBC, ASCE 7, ACI 318, AISC 360, NDS/SDPWS, TMS 402).
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and collaboration skills.
  • Clear communication abilities for working with internal teams, consultants, and clients.
  • Demonstrated leadership in delivering coordinated and technically sound structural solutions.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate in writing and verbally via phone, video conferencing, and in-person.
  • Visual acuity to perform responsibilities.

Work Environment

  • We embrace a hybrid model that promotes both autonomy and collaboration, including the freedom to work from home, with regular in-office days to connect with teammates and build culture.
  • The office is a professional, open-space environment for collaborative and independent work.
