Job description

The Manicuring Teacher will manage the certification process of students seeking a career path in cosmetology with an emphasis on manicuring. The Manicuring Teacher will primarily be responsible for student instruction and oversee the certification program for students who will be certified through a basic 200-hour Manicuring Program. The Instructor will teach an approved course by The Ohio State Cosmetology and Barber Board so that students will be able to successfully earn a State certification. The individual is also responsible for maintaining all documentation required by The Ohio State Cosmetology and Barber Board, as well as appropriately registering, filing, and submitting all steps necessary to complete the certification process. The instructor will also provide appropriate modeling and instruction of business skills, employability / soft skills necessary to attain and retain employment.
Essential Functions
  • Using the approved course outline from the Ohio State Cosmetology and Barber Board, incorporate practical and theoretical principles into a dynamic learning environment so as to instruct students in the area of manicuring.
  • Using other resources and materials, develop any supplemental training materials that align with the manicure curriculum in order to support the student's ability to earn certification.
  • Develop lesson plans, pacing guides and activities that will ensure adequate time necessary for participants to learn the skills that result in the achievement of industry credentials.
  • Provide a supportive and optimistic learning environment in which students are actively engaged in learning.
  • Providing resources and instruction to prepare students for their State Board Examination including online testing and the practical examination.
  • Ensure classroom and lab area are in good repair and meets all compliance issues.
  • Provides support and guidance to students as they develop business skills with an emphasis on salon management, marketing skills, customer service, employability / soft skills such as teamwork, communication, accountability, and resiliency.
  • Incorporate critical thinking and functional academics by providing project-based and/or problem based learning opportunities to help students develop the communication and teamwork skills necessary to work through issues that are common to the business trades.
  • Ensure proactive, open, and effective communication with other members of the school team especially in regard to issues and concerns related to participation, performance, and well-being.
  • Mentor, coach, and advise students about workforce skills needed to gain employment in this job sector. Use personal experiences to guide and positively influence students as it relates to leadership development, self-discipline, and optimism.
  • In coordination with the School Director, Director of Career-Technical Education and Placement Specialist, help build relationships and contacts with business partners that may provide employment opportunities for graduates as well as a Student Internship Program.
  • Provide required performance reports; participate in relevant meetings, workshops and/or committees.
  • Maintain a detailed tracking system and complete all steps of certification processes ultimately resulting in the participants receiving their credential in a timely manner.

Performance Outcomes
  • Maintains and provides weekly updates on the appropriate "Progress Tracker" for each credential.
  • Ensures the completion of Credit Flex Plans for each student so that students may be awarded available academic credits.
  • Ensures that all students are appropriately enrolled in the correct DASL course.
  • Completes all steps necessary for students to take the certification test and ensures that copies of any certifications earned are provided to the school's Placement Specialist for inclusion in the student's Career Portfolio for graduation.
  • Assists in securing Workforce Experience (WEX) opportunities for students and ensures that classroom learning is relevant and functional in supporting a student's WEX placement.
  • Participates in Quarterly Workforce Advisory Committee as needed
  • Actively assists in the recruitment and retention of students in this pathway, especially as it relates to improved attendance and certification completion.

Qualifications
  • Must hold a current, valid Manicuring Instructor License from the Ohio State Cosmetology and Barber Board.
  • If not currently licensed, must be willing to obtain an Ohio Department of Education Career Technical Teaching license

  • The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; and significant fine finger dexterity. This job is performed a generally clean and healthy environment.
