What is an internship in mycology?

An internship in mycology is a temporary, practical work experience focused on the study of fungi, including mushrooms, molds, and yeasts. Interns typically assist researchers or professionals in laboratory or field settings, helping with tasks such as collecting samples, performing experiments, and analyzing data. These internships provide valuable hands-on experience, networking opportunities, and a chance to learn specialized techniques in fungal biology. They are ideal for students or recent graduates interested in careers in biology, agriculture, medicine, or environmental science.

What types of projects or research might I work on during a mycology internship?

As a mycology intern, you can expect to participate in a variety of projects ranging from laboratory-based fungal identification and culturing, to fieldwork collecting mushroom or mold samples. Interns often assist with experimental design, data collection, and analysis, and may also help maintain fungal cultures or contribute to ongoing research on fungal ecology, plant-pathogen interactions, or medical applications. Collaboration with research scientists, graduate students, and sometimes external partners is common, providing valuable hands-on experience and networking opportunities. This diversity of tasks helps interns gain a well-rounded understanding of the field and can open doors to more specialized roles in academia, industry, or environmental organizations.
