Location: -Northern Arizona VA Healthcare System (NAVAHCS)

Position Summary
  • The Radiation Physicist (Medical Physicist) serves as a technical expert responsible for ensuring the safe, accurate, and compliant use of all ionizing radiation and MRI imaging systems within the VA healthcare facility. The role functions as both a Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) and Magnetic Resonance Safety Expert (MRSE) and provides comprehensive oversight of radiation safety programs, imaging equipment performance, and regulatory compliance.
  • This position is essential to maintaining patient and staff safety while ensuring compliance with federal, state, VA, and accreditation standards.
Key Responsibilities
1. Radiation Safety Program Oversight
  • Serve as the designated Radiation Safety Officer (RSO)
  • Implement and manage the facility-wide radiation safety program
  • Ensure compliance with ALARA principles (As Low As Reasonably Achievable)
  • Review radiation exposure records across all departments
  • Recommend corrective actions to reduce radiation exposure
2. Imaging Equipment Quality Assurance & Testing
  • Perform acceptance testing, annual surveys, and ongoing quality control for:
  • X-ray systems (fixed, mobile, dental)
  • Computed Tomography (CT) scanners
  • Fluoroscopy systems (including interventional and cath lab equipment)
  • MRI systems
  • DEXA bone densitometry systems
  • Ultrasound systems (QA support)
Responsibilities include:
  • Equipment calibration and performance verification
  • Beam quality and dose measurements
  • Image quality testing and artifact evaluation
  • Dose index and exposure accuracy verification
  • Compliance with ACR, FDA, and VA standards
3. Dosimetry and Radiation Measurements
  • Measure and report patient skin entrance dose for X-ray systems
  • Evaluate radiation dose rates for fluoroscopy procedures
  • Establish and maintain skin dose monitoring programs
  • Compare exposure levels to diagnostic reference standards
4. CT and Fluoroscopy Optimization
  • Perform annual CT protocol optimization
  • Review and evaluate fluoroscopy dose output and imaging performance
  • Ensure accuracy of displayed radiation dose metrics (e.g., CTDIvol, KAP)
  • Assess imaging protocols for dose reduction and image quality balance

5. MRI Safety and Performance Evaluation
  • Conduct MRI safety inspections and annual reviews
Evaluate:
  • Magnetic field homogeneity
  • RF coil performance
  • Image quality and artifact presence
  • MRI system safety compliance with ACR standards
  • Maintain MRI safety documentation and QC programs

6. Shielding Design & Facility Planning
  • Perform radiation shielding calculations for new or modified imaging rooms
  • Ensure designs comply with NCRP Report No. 147 and NCRP 145
  • Provide technical reports with facility layout and exposure assessments

7. Regulatory Compliance
  • Ensure adherence to all applicable standards, including:
  • FDA regulations
  • Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) requirements
  • OSHA safety standards
  • American College of Radiology (ACR) guidelines
  • The Joint Commission (TJC) requirements
  • VA radiation safety policies

8. Reporting and Documentation
  • Provide detailed technical reports within required timelines (typically 15 days)
  • Submit annual radiation safety program review reports
  • Document all equipment testing and QA/QC findings
  • Maintain compliance documentation for audits and inspections

9. Emergency and On-Call Support
  • Provide consultation and emergency response for radiation safety incidents
  • Support equipment failure investigations affecting radiation output or imaging quality
  • Provide additional technical services as requested by VA leadership
Required Qualifications
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible Medical Physicist (ABR or equivalent certification body)
  • Minimum 2-5 years of hospital medical physics experience
  • Completion of CAMPEP-accredited residency (for board eligible candidates)
  • Current employment or active practice in medical physics
  • Demonstrated experience in diagnostic imaging physics
