Job description

Courtroom Assistant 
Location: Colorado Springs, CO (Onsite)
Duration: 6 months (possible extension)
Compensation: $28.84/hr

Position summary
Provide paraprofessional and administrative support for courtroom operations and case processing. Work under supervision to ensure efficient, accurate, and compliant handling of courtroom activities, legal documents, and related procedures.
Essential duties (primary)
Manage courtroom activities: support judges and court staff, maintain courtroom decorum, administer witness oaths, and ensure efficient in-court case flow.
Case processing: enter and update case dispositions in the case management system, verify charges for legal sufficiency, and schedule future court dates.
Coordination: arrange appearances for interpreters, attorneys, witnesses, and legal guardians; coordinate with detention facilities for inmate appearances.
Evidence and exhibits: mark and record exhibits when admitted, handle evidence release or retention as directed.
Documentation and reporting: prepare and maintain legal documents, verify court file documentation, prepare judicial surveys, and maintain accurate statistics.
QC and compliance: interpret judicial directives, ensure execution of court orders, notify law enforcement of wants/warrants, and resolve case-related inquiries.
Provide technical direction: assist and guide court staff on policies, procedures, and accounting practices as needed.
Additional duties 
Prepare court dockets and review cases before sessions; confirm bonds, counsel, interpreters, and other requirements.
Clear dockets and close sessions: collect documents, verify official records, calendar follow-up dates, and communicate with jail and law enforcement as needed.
Manage appeals intake and filing: prepare and file court records with District Court, meet filing deadlines, and monitor appeal status.
Jury Commissioner duties (as assigned): summon jurors, manage jury selection and records, handle juror inquiries and excusals, and maintain jury management system.
Referee Clerk duties (as assigned): prepare trial files, coordinate subpoenas, print session minutes, and merge referee orders into case files.
Minimum qualifications
Education: High school diploma or GED (or equivalent).
Experience: Minimum 3 years of full-time professional experience in a related field; substitutions allowed per policy (one year experience equals one year education or coursework).
Technical skills: Proficiency with Microsoft Office, court case management software, and justice information systems.
Abilities: Strong reading, writing, and basic math skills; intermediate technical judgment and decision-making; effective oral and written communication.
Supervision
Supervision received: General direction; follow established procedures and policies.
Supervision exercised: May serve as lead worker, providing training, instruction, and quality oversight to others.
Physical demands
Primarily sedentary work; occasional lifting up to 10 lbs.
Other information
Regular and predictable attendance required.
No required certifications at this time; must obtain any department-required certifications if assigned.
This position may require occasional direction of temporary staff, interns, or assistants.
