Internship Medical Image Processing information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Internship Medical Image Processing, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship Medical Image Processing, you need a strong foundation in biomedical engineering, computer science, or a related field, along with knowledge of image analysis concepts. Familiarity with programming languages such as Python or MATLAB, and experience with image processing libraries (e.g., OpenCV, ITK) or machine learning frameworks are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate technical findings clearly are important soft skills. These abilities enable interns to effectively process and interpret medical images, contributing to advancements in diagnostics and patient care.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on during a Medical Image Processing internship?

As a Medical Image Processing intern, you'll typically work on projects involving the analysis, enhancement, and interpretation of medical images such as MRI, CT, or ultrasound scans. Common tasks include developing or testing image processing algorithms, annotating datasets, and using software tools like MATLAB or Python for data analysis. You may also collaborate with research teams, radiologists, or software engineers to support ongoing studies or product development. This hands-on experience helps you build practical skills and gain exposure to cutting-edge medical technology.

What is an Internship in Medical Image Processing?

An Internship in Medical Image Processing is a temporary position, often for students or recent graduates, that provides hands-on experience working with medical imaging data and related technologies. Interns typically assist with tasks such as analyzing medical images, developing or testing image processing algorithms, and supporting research projects in clinical or academic settings. This role offers the opportunity to learn about advanced imaging modalities (like MRI, CT, or X-ray), gain programming experience, and contribute to improving healthcare diagnostics. Internships may also include mentorship from experienced professionals and exposure to the latest software tools in the field.

What is the difference between Internship Medical Image Processing vs Medical Imaging Technician?

AspectInternship Medical Image ProcessingMedical Imaging Technician
CredentialsTypically pursuing or recent graduate in medical imaging, biomedical engineering, or related fieldsCertification or associate degree in radiologic technology or related field
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, hospitals, or academic settings; focus on data analysis and software developmentHospitals, clinics; operating imaging equipment and capturing images
Job FocusDeveloping algorithms, processing medical images, research projectsPerforming imaging procedures, maintaining equipment, ensuring image quality

Internship Medical Image Processing roles focus on developing and analyzing medical images through software, often in research or academic settings. Medical Imaging Technicians operate imaging equipment directly with patients, focusing on capturing diagnostic images. Both roles require knowledge of medical imaging but differ in responsibilities, environment, and career stage.

Job description

Sartorius has an onsite position available in our Ann Arbor, MI site. We are seeking an Image Analysis Engineer to develop cutting-edge technology for producing and analyzing image data in the pharmaceutical and biotech industries. You will focus on extracting quantitative, biologically meaningful information from images using advanced computer vision and machine learning techniques. Working closely with subject matter experts and a multi-disciplinary Product Development team, you will design and implement image analysis algorithms and AI models that power products delivering reliable, quantitative measurements from images of biological systems.
What you will accomplish together with us:
  • Develop and implement image analysis and computer vision algorithms with a focus on robustness, scalability, and product integration.
  • Design, train, and validate machine learning and deep learning models for image-based tasks (e.g., classification, segmentation, detection, tracking, quality assessment).
  • Define and refine requirements for image processing and image-based analytics, including performance metrics and validation criteria.
  • Write clear, maintainable, high-quality code for image processing and model training and inference, optimized for large image datasets.
  • Collaborate with software engineers to integrate algorithms and AI models into user-friendly, production-grade software products.
  • Work with product development, product management, and research teams to generate biological insight from image data.
  • Support technical support, application specialists, and R&D teams in understanding image analysis algorithms behavior, limitations, and appropriate use.
  • Mentor and support junior team members in best practices for image analysis, machine learning, and software engineering.
  • Lead design and development of image analysis algorithms and AI models within product development projects
  • Stay current with advances in computer vision, bioimage analysis, and AI model architectures for imaging, and apply them to real-world problems.

What will convince us:
  • Ph.D. degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Data science, Applied Mathematics, or related field and 2+ years of experience developing image processing and computer vision algorithms.
  • Or Master's degree in one of the above fields and 5+ years of experience in developing image processing / computer vision algorithms.
  • Strong analytical and mathematical abilities.
  • Solid foundation in classical image processing (denoising, enhancement, feature extraction, segmentation).
  • Experience with classical ML on image-derived features (e.g., random forests, gradient boosting, SVMs) and deep learning for images (e.g., CNNs, autoencoders, vision transformers).
  • Experience with image analysis tools (e.g., OpenCV, scikit-image, ImageJ, CellProfiler)
  • Proficiency with tools commonly used for developing and implementing image analysis algorithms (e.g., Python, C++, MATLAB, etc.).
  • Strong software engineering practices (version control, code review, testing, documentation).
  • Familiarity with cell microscopy and cell biology (preferred).
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team.
