Job Description:
Responsible for directing and coordinating the fabrication, installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of mechanical, electromechanical, and automated systems. This role supports the design, implementation, and optimization of electrical and mechanical equipment used in conveying, automation, and power distribution systems. The position applies foundational engineering principles to support safe, reliable, and efficient operations while contributing to continuous improvement initiatives.
This role provides functional expertise that is theoretical and conceptual in nature and is typically gained through a combination of formal education and hands-on experience. The Engineer operates primarily as an individual contributor, with opportunities to provide guidance or informal leadership in a "player-coach" capacity when needed.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering & Technical Support
  • Direct and coordinate the fabrication, installation, operation, application, maintenance, and repair of mechanical and electromechanical machinery, equipment, tools, engines, and automation systems.
  • Plan, support, and assist with the design, manufacture, installation, testing, and maintenance of electrical systems and apparatus, including:
    • Electric motors
    • Machinery controls
    • Lighting systems
    • Wiring and power distribution devices
    • Electrical systems used for the generation, transmission, and control of electric power
  • Evaluate conveying systems, machinery layouts, and operational methods to ensure compliance with safety, quality, and regulatory standards.

Automation & Process Improvement
  • Assess automation systems, process flows, and conveying technologies to identify opportunities for increased efficiency, reliability, and safety.
  • Recommend improvements, innovations, and best practices related to automation usage, system design, and material flow procedures.
  • Support implementation of approved improvements, ensuring minimal disruption to operations.

Problem Solving & Analysis
  • Apply working knowledge of engineering theories, practices, and procedures to perform routine to moderately complex assignments.
  • Resolve common engineering and operational issues by following documented processes, using established precedents, or seeking guidance from more experienced engineers.
  • Analyze straightforward technical problems and propose solutions based on factual information, prior experience, engineering judgment, and existing standards.

Collaboration & Communication
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including operations, maintenance, safety, and engineering peers.
  • Share technical findings, factual information, and recommendations with team members and leadership as appropriate.
  • Contribute to team objectives by supporting quality outcomes and reinforcing safe operating practices.

Level & Scope
  • Entry-level position within UPS's professional career track.
  • Primary impact is on the quality and timeliness of individual work, with some influence on team outcomes.

Qualifications
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related engineering discipline OR equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Internship, co-op, or early-career experience in manufacturing, automation, facilities engineering, or conveying systems is preferred but not required.

Knowledge & Skills
  • Foundational knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems, automation, and industrial equipment.
  • Basic understanding of safety standards, quality requirements, and engineering best practices.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to apply technical concepts in real-world operational environments.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
