Position Summary
The ECS MESA Office serves under-represented, low-income students in the College of ECS by advising and guiding students, coordinating program activities, fostering a sense of community, and collaborating with College leadership, faculty, and staff to enhance the overall educational experience. Under general supervision of Director of MESA Office, the Academic Advisor II provides support to ECS students on program curriculum and course selection for the major, as well as on General Education and graduation requirements. The Academic Advisor II engages in a developmental process that helps clarify and implement individual educational plans consistent with their skills, interests, and values. The incumbent needs to be sensitive to the needs of the diverse and underserved student population and aims to create a supportive environment that empowers students to excel in their studies and make the most of their college experience.
FLSA: Exempt (not eligible for overtime compensation)
Anticipated Hiring Range: $ 5,083.00 per month - $ 5,336.00 per month
CSU Classification Salary Range: $ 5,083.00 per month - $ 7,228.00 per month

Work Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm. Occasional weekends for campus events. Summer Hours (May- August) will be 7:30am - 4:00pm with a 30 minute lunch.

The Mathematics, Engineering, and Science Achievement (MESA) Program supports educationally disadvantaged students to attain four-year degrees in engineering or computer science. The program establishes a peer community for its students, most of whom are first in their family to go to college. Rigorous academics, leadership preparation, and collaborative problem-solving training produce highly-skilled graduates who meet STEM industry's workforce needs. MESA is postsecondary component of MESA California
The MESA Program at Sacramento State is an academic support program within the College of Engineering and Computer Science. MESA helps students develop personally and professionally in preparation for the corporate world. MESA creates a family-like culture where students feel supported in their academic careers.

Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge and Abilities:
Working knowledge of the practices, procedures and activities of the program to which assigned; general knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management. General knowledge of research and interview techniques; and of the principles of individual and group behavior.
Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations; use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements; obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews; reason logically; collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data; advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required; recognize multicultural, multisexed and multi-aged value systems and work accordingly; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts; and, rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions and programs of the campus to which assigned. Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program or service areas.
Possession of these knowledge and abilities typically is demonstrated through the Experience requirements below.
Experience:
Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master's degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience.
Education:
Equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
Required Qualifications
Experience
- Experience in a higher education setting (e.g. advising, admissions, student programming or development).
- Experience working with students from various ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds, including students that may be considered to be "at promise."
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- Ability to independently prioritize, plan and organize work in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to provide direct programs and/ or services to a diverse student population.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in a diverse environment.
- Ability to compile, prepare, write and review reports.
- Proficiency using standard office software packages (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
- Familiarity working with university-based record/ data systems/ software (example: PeopleSoft).
- Ability to understand, interpret and apply moderately complex rules, policies, regulations, and procedures.
- Commitment to maintaining a welcoming and inclusive work environment with diverse colleagues and constituents including faculty, students, staff, and members of the community.

Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Educational Leadership, College Student Personnel, Educational Counseling, or related field
- Knowledge of the engineering, computer science, and construction management programs at Sacramento State.
