This role allows postdoctoral researchers to gain practical experience by working on advanced projects, often in collaboration with industry or academic partners. The position focuses on developing new materials, improving existing ones, and applying scientific knowledge to solve real-world problems. Internships at this level help postdocs expand their professional network and enhance their research and technical skills, preparing them for future careers in academia, industry, or government.

What are some typical collaborative projects that an internship material science postdoc might be involved in?

As an Internship Material Science Postdoc, you can expect to work on interdisciplinary projects that often involve close collaboration with chemists, physicists, engineers, and industry partners. These projects may include developing new materials for energy applications, optimizing manufacturing processes, or characterizing material properties using advanced instrumentation. Collaboration is typically fostered through regular lab meetings, joint research initiatives, and co-authorship of scientific publications. Engaging with diverse teams not only enhances your technical skills but also helps build a strong professional network within the field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship material science postdoc, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship Material Science Postdoc, you typically need a PhD in materials science or a related field, strong research skills, and a solid understanding of material characterization techniques. Experience with analytical tools such as SEM, TEM, XRD, and specialized data analysis software is often required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and effective communication make a candidate stand out in research environments. These skills and qualities are crucial for advancing innovative projects, publishing impactful research, and contributing effectively to interdisciplinary teams.

What is the difference between Internship Material Science Postdoc vs Research Scientist Material Science?

AspectInternship Material Science PostdocResearch Scientist Material Science
Required CredentialsGraduate degree (Ph.D. or equivalent), often in progress or recently completedPh.D. in Material Science or related field, with several years of research experience
Work EnvironmentAcademic or research institution, temporary position, focused on training and skill developmentIndustry or research lab, permanent or long-term position, focused on project execution and innovation
Employer & Industry UsageUniversities, research institutes, some corporate R&D departmentsManufacturers, tech companies, R&D divisions in industry

In summary, an Internship Material Science Postdoc is a temporary, training-focused role for those pursuing or recently completed a Ph.D., mainly in academic or research settings. A Research Scientist Material Science is a more advanced, permanent role in industry, requiring extensive research experience and contributing to product development and innovation.

Job description

Position Summary

Bimeda is hiring Biological R&D Scientists to join our Vaccine R&D team, supporting discovery, development, and characterization of vaccines for livestock and/or aquaculture species. This broadband posting spans Scientist I-IV - the level and title offered depend on your qualifications (see Level Guide). Entry-level Scientists execute established protocols under supervision; senior Scientists independently design studies, mentor staff, and drive regulatory submissions. All levels work within USDA Center for Veterinary Biologics (CVB) and GLP standards.

Key Responsibilities

Scope and independence scale with level. Scientists will:

  • Design, execute, and interpret experiments on antigen expression, purification, characterization, adjuvant selection, and formulation (independence increases with level)
  • Perform core molecular biology, microbiology, and cell culture techniques (PCR, cloning, Western blot, ELISA)
  • Run and, at senior levels, develop immunological assays (SNT, VN, HI, ELISA, ELISpot, multiplex cytokine, FACS)
  • Support or lead in vitro/in vivo safety and efficacy studies, including vaccination-challenge trials
  • Maintain GLP-compliant lab records; prepare reagents, media, and challenge materials
  • Contribute to USDA Outline of Production, license applications, study reports, and SOPs (III/IV author/revise)
  • Collaborate with Regulatory, Manufacturing, and Quality; present findings internally and externally (III/IV)
  • Mentor junior staff on technique and compliance (III/IV)

Level Guide
Scientist I
Grade/Level: Entry Level
Supervision: Works under close supervision and executes established protocols.
Education: Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Immunology, Virology, Biochemistry, or a related life science field (Master's preferred).
Experience: 0-2 years of relevant laboratory research experience. Internships and graduate research may be considered.
Mentorship: No mentorship responsibilities expected.
Regulatory Contribution: Maintains GLP-compliant laboratory notebooks and records.
Scientist II
Grade/Level: Entry Level
Supervision: Performs standard protocols independently under general supervision.
Education: Bachelor's degree in a relevant scientific discipline (Master's preferred).
