Location: Clarksville, TN
What's in it for you
At Trane Technologies, you'll join a collaborative manufacturing engineering team and gain hands-on experience with real production equipment in a fast-paced industrial environment. This internship is designed for someone at the beginning of their engineering career who wants to build practical skills in Allen-Bradley PLCs, industrial networking, and Inductive Automation Ignition.
You'll work alongside experienced engineers and technicians to support automation projects, troubleshoot equipment issues, and contribute to improvements in manufacturing processes. This is an excellent opportunity to apply classroom learning in a plant setting, strengthen your technical skills, and build experience with technologies used in modern manufacturing.
What you will do
  • Assist with developing, testing, and improving control logic for manufacturing equipment and automation systems
  • Support troubleshooting of Allen-Bradley PLCs, HMIs, sensors, and other industrial control devices
  • Help connect and validate communication between PLCs, networked devices, and plant systems
  • Assist with basic Ignition development tasks, including tag setup, screen updates, and data visibility improvements
  • Support industrial networking activities such as device configuration, connectivity checks, and communication troubleshooting
  • Work with engineers to identify and resolve hardware, software, and communication issues on manufacturing equipment
  • Document programming changes, test results, and troubleshooting steps for automation projects
  • Participate in continuous improvement efforts that improve equipment reliability, process efficiency, and operational visibility

What you will bring
Minimum Qualifications
  • Currently pursuing or have completed an associate's or bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Automation Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field
  • Basic understanding of PLCs, controls, or industrial automation
  • Exposure to Allen-Bradley PLCs or ladder logic through coursework, labs, student projects, or internship experience
  • Basic understanding of industrial or computer networking, including IP addressing, Ethernet communications, and device connectivity
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and willingness to learn in a hands-on manufacturing environment
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with engineers, technicians, and operations teams

Preferred Qualifications
  • Exposure to Inductive Automation Ignition, SCADA, or HMI development through coursework, projects, or prior experience
  • Familiarity with Allen-Bradley Studio 5000, FactoryTalk, or similar industrial automation software
  • Basic knowledge of industrial communication concepts such as EtherNet/IP, Modbus, TCP/IP, RS232, or RS485
  • Experience with sensors, actuators, relays, and other control system components
  • Exposure to manufacturing, maintenance, controls, or automation-related projects
  • Experience with technical documentation, data collection, and basic analysis
  • Familiarity with programming or scripting tools such as Python is a plus

What you'll learn
  • How PLCs, HMIs, SCADA, and industrial networks are used in a large-scale manufacturing environment
  • How to troubleshoot communication and controls issues on live production equipment
  • How Ignition can be used to improve visibility into manufacturing processes and machine performance
  • How automation projects are tested, validated, and implemented in a production setting
  • How engineering teams partner with operations to drive safety, quality, and productivity improvements

Why this role is a great fit
This internship is ideal for a student or early-career candidate who has foundational exposure to automation and wants to grow in PLC programming, industrial connectivity, and Ignition development. Relevant coursework, lab work, personal projects, and student team experience are encouraged to apply.
