Job description

This position performs triage of established patients, prepares patients for clinical encounters, provides education to patients, and provides training to Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (CNA’s, CMA’s, MA’s, CA’s, etc.). 

Minimum Qualifications:


Education

Graduation from a Licensed Practical Nursing Program or equivalent.  Current BLS Certification. Current Alaska LPN license. Cultural competence in working with diverse populations required.   


Experience

One year experience required; One year of experience in an outpatient clinical setting preferred. 

Essential Functions:

  1. Performs initial clinical interview and processing of patients that includes a basic set of vital signs and a description of the complaint/reason for visit.
  2. Accurately and consistently completes clinical forms in medical records to include auditing records for the appropriate clinical forms in accordance with the medical, clinical and nursing policies and procedures.
  3. Obtains the appropriate information, specimens, lab results, x-ray results and health history from patients to prepare them for the clinical providers.
  4. Assesses for and identifies abnormal vital signs and patient conditions and immediately reports this to the appropriate clinician.
  5. Assists clinicians with procedures, such as minor surgical procedures, and prepares the exam rooms and instruments for these procedures.
  6. Performs basic triage of established patients, walk-ins and telephonically. Directs walk-in patients to appropriate level of care, to include response to emergent situations within appropriate scope of practice.
  7. Performs procedures that are within appropriate scope of practice (for example, tympanography, audiometry, spirometry, administration of medications, venipuncture, performing EKGs, performing vision screening, dressing changes and intravenous starts).
  8. Performs basic laboratory functions to include venipuncture, urine dips, finger stick hemoglobin and glucose levels, urine pregnancy tests and accurately documents the results on the appropriate lab forms.
  9. Provides and documents patient education.
  10. Assists with training of other staff members.
  11. Listens to voice mail messages and responds in accordance with clinic protocol.
  12. Sets up referral appointments for patients.
  13. Performs support duties on a daily basis as assigned.
  14. Inventory and stock medications, vaccines and medical supplies.
  15. Performs instrument cleaning, packaging and sterilization.
  16. Operates and maintains specialized office and medical equipment.
  17. Participates in continuous quality improvement activities.
  18. Integrates work with other staff to ensure timely, accurate patient flow.
  19. Complies with center’s policies and procedures.
  20. Utilizes personal computer.
  21. Performs other duties as assigned by LPN Supervisor.






Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Phlebotomy, injection and intravenous skills.

Recent computer skills.

Knowledge of common office equipment (copier, fax, printer, etc.).
