Job description

Job Title: R&D Laboratory Technician (Materials & Building Products)
Role Overview
We are seeking a hands-on, safety-conscious, and detail-oriented R&D Laboratory Technician to join our materials testing and product development laboratory. In this role, you will perform specialized analytical and physical testing on building and interior materials (such as gypsum, insulation, and composite substrates) to support new product development, manufacturing operations, and cost-reduction initiatives.
This is a dynamic, on-site technical role combining experimental execution with active laboratory management. You will work closely with R&D engineers and scientists to prepare material samples, execute ASTM/UL test methods, troubleshoot experimental equipment, and maintain strict 5S and safety standards. If you enjoy hands-on physical testing, meticulous data documentation, and collaborative R&D support, we want to hear from you.
Key Responsibilities
Laboratory Testing & Sample Preparation
• Sample Processing: Prepare and process exploratory and standard material samples (including board and composite panels) in accordance with ASTM, UL, or internal corporate test methods.
• Experimental Execution: Conduct hands-on laboratory experiments, make detailed observations, and ensure all materials are evaluated and approved according to established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
• Equipment Upkeep: Set up, operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment and instruments; lead basic machine repair and calibration efforts to minimize downtime.
Data Analysis & Reporting
• Data Collection: Collect, analyze, and report scientific and engineering data obtained from laboratory instruments using structured planning and coordination.
• Statistical Analysis: Perform preliminary statistical data analysis using tools like Microsoft Excel, interpret results, and maintain comprehensive laboratory notebooks.
• Summary Reports: Author concise, technically accurate summary reports and communicate findings effectively to project stakeholders.
Lab Management & Safety
• HSE Compliance: Continuously evaluate the workplace for safety concerns, strictly adhering to Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) policies and behavioral safety goals.
• 5S & Inventory: Lead daily 5S laboratory duties, manage chemical inventory, order supplies, and support lab audit preparation and action follow-up.
Qualifications & Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
• Education & Experience (Tiered):
oAssociate's degree in a scientific field (Chemistry, Engineering, or related sciences) preferred; OR High School Diploma/GED with a minimum of 3 to 4 years of dedicated chemical/materials lab experience. (Note: Additional hands-on laboratory experience working with chemicals and equipment can substitute directly for a degree).
• Experience Baseline: Prior laboratory experience is required (Co-op and internship backgrounds are warmly welcomed and fully acceptable).
• Technical Mastery:
oStrong understanding of laboratory procedures, especially Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) and chemical handling practices.
oComfort working in a hands-on laboratory environment utilizing basic machinery, hand tools, and physical testing apparatus.
oProficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel) with a basic understanding of data analysis and interpretation.
• Core Competencies: Ability to work independently with minimal supervision; strong ownership of lab work and technical reporting; collaborative team player.
Preferred Attributes
• Experience operating analytical laboratory equipment and conducting physical materials characterization.
• Exposure to method development and technical report writing within an R&D setting.
