What types of projects or tasks can an Internship Laser Engineer expect to work on, and how do they typically collaborate with senior engineers?

As an Internship Laser Engineer, you can expect to be involved in hands-on projects such as assisting with laser alignment, conducting optical experiments, collecting and analyzing data, and supporting the maintenance of laboratory equipment. Interns often work closely with senior engineers and scientists, receiving guidance on experimental methods and troubleshooting technical challenges. Collaboration occurs through regular team meetings, shared documentation, and mentorship, which helps interns quickly develop practical skills and understand industry standards. This supportive environment not only builds technical proficiency but also offers valuable networking and learning opportunities.

What is the difference between Internship Laser Engineer vs Laser Engineer?

AspectInternship Laser EngineerLaser Engineer
CredentialsEnrolled in or recent graduate of engineering or physics programBachelor's or higher in engineering, physics, or related field
Work EnvironmentInternship setting, learning-focused, entry-level tasksFull-time professional role, project-driven, technical responsibilities
Employer & IndustryResearch labs, universities, companies offering internshipsManufacturers, tech firms, research institutions in laser technology

The main difference is that an Internship Laser Engineer is a temporary, learning-focused position for students or recent graduates, while a Laser Engineer is a full-time professional responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining laser systems. Internships provide hands-on experience, whereas Laser Engineers perform advanced technical work in the industry.

What does an Internship Laser Engineer do?

An Internship Laser Engineer assists experienced engineers in the research, development, testing, and maintenance of laser systems and related optical devices. Responsibilities often include running experiments, collecting and analyzing data, calibrating equipment, and documenting results. Interns may also help with assembling laser setups, troubleshooting technical issues, and ensuring lab safety standards are met. This role provides hands-on experience in both the theoretical and practical aspects of laser engineering, making it ideal for students pursuing careers in photonics or optical engineering.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Internship Laser Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship Laser Engineer, you typically need a background in physics, optics, or engineering, along with foundational knowledge in laser principles and laboratory techniques. Familiarity with optical simulation software, laboratory measurement equipment, and safety protocols is often required. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help interns collaborate with teams and learn quickly in a technical environment. These skills ensure accurate experimental results, safe laboratory practices, and professional growth within the field.

Our Reality Capture Division is one of the fastest-growing segments of the firm, emphasizing excellence in geomatics practices and high-precision data collection to drive smarter, faster project delivery.

SURVEY TECHNICIAN (ENTRY LEVEL)
3D LASER SCANNING & POINT CLOUD
TEMPORARY (6 MONTHS) WITH OPPORTUNITY FOR PERMANENT EMPLOYMENT

Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area and Beyond (eastern U.S.)

THE OPPORTUNITY
We are seeking an entry-level, detail-oriented Survey Technician to join our growing team of BIM professionals. This is a W-2 temporary direct-hire position for six (6) months with a full benefits package, and an opportunity to convert to a permanent role based on performance, workload needs, and team fit.

In this role, you will support our data acquisition efforts through 3D laser scanning, point cloud processing, and surveying tasks. You will work alongside experienced team members to capture and organize spatial data that supports BIM modeling, design verification, and as-built documentation.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist with terrestrial 3D laser scanning in diverse field environments (e.g., offices, utility spaces, and exterior campus sites).
  • Support point cloud registration and processing using Leica Cyclone and NavVis Ivion (training provided as needed).
  • Assist with control surveys, topographic surveys, and existing-conditions surveys using established field procedures and technologies.
  • Help coordinate field activities with internal teams and project stakeholders to support accuracy and schedule alignment.
  • Organize project files and support QA/QC processes for scanning and registration outputs.
  • Support downstream deliverables by preparing scan data for integration into design platforms and documentation workflows.
  • Maintain scanning/survey equipment and follow established field procedures and safety practices.
  • Travel as needed to access project sites, including travel for several days at a time as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Associate degree (or in-progress) in Geomatics, Surveying, Civil Engineering Technology, Architecture, Construction Management, or a related technical field; OR equivalent technical training (trade school, military, or relevant hands-on experience).
  • Demonstrated interest in laser scanning, surveying, reality capture, BIM, or related A/E/C technical workflows.
  • Comfort working in field environments and adhering to safety procedures.
  • Strong attention to detail and basic computer proficiency (file organization, transferring large datasets, following documented workflows).
  • Ability to communicate clearly, follow instructions, and work collaboratively with technical teams.
  • Ability to travel for several days at a time, as required by project needs.

Preferred

  • Internship, coursework, or project experience with 3D laser scanning, surveying instruments, or point cloud workflows.
  • Familiarity with Leica Cyclone, NavVis Ivion, Revit, and/or AutoCAD (not required).
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel within the region and to out-of-area project sites as needed.
  • Manufacturer or industry training related to scanning/surveying (Leica, NavVis, Trimble, etc.).

EMPLOYMENT DETAILS
