What does an Internship LabVIEW Software Engineer do?

An Internship Labview Software Engineer assists in developing, testing, and maintaining software applications using LabVIEW, a graphical programming environment commonly used for data acquisition, instrument control, and automation. Interns typically work under the guidance of senior engineers to design virtual instruments, automate laboratory processes, and analyze test data. They gain hands-on experience in software development, debugging, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams in engineering settings. This role is ideal for students or recent graduates interested in software and hardware integration in fields such as electronics, robotics, and automation.

What are the typical projects and responsibilities for an Internship LabVIEW Software Engineer?

As an Internship LabVIEW Software Engineer, you will typically assist in developing, testing, and troubleshooting automated test systems using LabVIEW software. Your daily tasks may include writing code to control instruments, analyzing test data, and collaborating closely with senior engineers to implement new features or optimize existing test setups. Interns often participate in team meetings to discuss project progress and learn about hardware-software integration in a hands-on environment. This role offers an excellent opportunity to gain practical experience with industry-standard tools while building foundational skills for a career in test engineering.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Internship LabVIEW Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship LabVIEW Software Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical or computer engineering, programming knowledge (especially in LabVIEW), and a relevant academic pursuit or degree. Familiarity with National Instruments LabVIEW software, data acquisition hardware, and possibly a CLAD (Certified LabVIEW Associate Developer) certification is highly beneficial. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective teamwork skills help interns excel in dynamic engineering environments. These competencies ensure accurate system development, efficient troubleshooting, and successful collaboration on technical projects.

What is the difference between Internship Labview Software Engineer vs Entry-Level Electrical Engineer?

AspectInternship Labview Software EngineerEntry-Level Electrical Engineer
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing or holding a degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related fields; familiarity with LabVIEWBachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field; basic understanding of electrical systems
Work EnvironmentInternship setting, often in labs or R&D departments, focusing on software development and testingOffice or lab environment, working on electrical design, testing, and system integration
Industry UsageCommon in automation, testing, and control systems industriesWidespread across power, electronics, and manufacturing sectors

The main difference is that an Internship Labview Software Engineer focuses on developing and testing LabVIEW-based software during an internship, often with a learning component, while an Entry-Level Electrical Engineer works on electrical system design and analysis with broader engineering responsibilities. Both roles require relevant technical knowledge but differ in scope and focus.

Job description

Build the systems that test the technology shaping the future of RF and microwave communications.

About the Company

Mission Microwave Technologies was founded in 2014 to revolutionize the next generation of Solid-State Power Amplifiers (SSPAs) and Block Upconverters (BUCs). We leverage advanced GaN transistors, proprietary power-combining techniques, and innovative full-system designs to deliver the industry’s most efficient, compact, and lightweight high-power SSPAs.

With more than 100 years of combined leadership experience supplying high-performance, high-reliability RF solutions to commercial, military, and space customers, Mission Microwave has grown rapidly over the past decade and is backed by a private equity firm committed to long-term innovation and expansion.

We are proud to be ranked #23 on Fortune’s Best Workplaces in Manufacturing & Production and to have been recognized as a Great Place to Work® since 2022.

Mission Microwave is headquartered at 6060 Phyllis Drive, Cypress, CA 90603.

About the Role

Are you a LabVIEW expert who loves building elegant, high-efficiency automation systems? Do you get energized by turning complex RF/microwave test requirements into software that is fast, accurate, and rock-solid? If so, you’ll thrive as a LabVIEW Programmer at Mission Microwave Technologies.

In this role, you will develop, optimize, and maintain the automated test and data-acquisition systems that ensure the performance and reliability of our cutting-edge RF and microwave products. You’ll work at the intersection of software engineering, hardware validation, and hands-on lab work supporting both high-volume production and next-generation engineering development.

What You’ll Do

  • Develop, debug, and maintain LabVIEW-based software for automated test systems, DAQ, instrument control, and engineering test benches.
  • Interface with industry-standard RF/microwave instruments—signal generators, VNAs, spectrum analyzers, power meters, and more—across GPIB, USB, LAN, PXI, and other protocols.
  • Collaborate with RF engineers, test engineers, and manufacturing teams to transform test requirements into scalable software architectures, test sequences, GUIs, and reporting tools.
  • Ensure software reliably measures key RF/microwave performance metrics, including gain, power, efficiency, noise figure, and linearity.
  • Apply modern software engineering best practices: modular design, clean code, documentation, version control, and maintainability.
  • Upgrade and optimize legacy test platforms to enhance speed, reliability, and user experience.
  • Provide hands-on support on the factory floor—troubleshooting hardware/software interactions, commissioning systems, and resolving issues quickly.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives around automation workflows, data management, and instrument integration.
  • Support new product introduction (NPI), ensuring test software scales with production throughput, yield, and quality goals.
  • Participate in system integration and test-fixture discussions, aligning software architecture with hardware and manufacturing strategies.

What You Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related technical field
  • 5+ years developing LabVIEW applications in test automation or DAQ environments
  • 3+ years experience with RF/microwave test and measurement
  • Hands-on experience controlling oscilloscopes, VNAs, signal generators, power meters, DAQs, and similar lab equipment
  • Advanced proficiency in LabVIEW (G-language), including modular design and state-machine architectures
  • Strong understanding of GPIB, USB, Ethernet, LXI, and related instrumentation protocols
  • Excellent troubleshooting and root-cause analysis skills—especially for software/hardware interactions
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced lab and manufacturing environment with engineers, technicians, and QA teams
Self-driven, detail-oriented, and collaborative, with a strong sense of ownership and responsibility
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion

Bonus Points

  • LabVIEW certification (CLD, CLA)
  • Experience with LabVIEW Analytics or Machine Learning Toolkit
  • Familiarity with Matlab, Python, and/or R
  • Experience with GPUs, FPGAs, or NPUs

At Mission Microwave, you don’t just take a job; you step into a mission that matters. We design and build world-class RF and microwave solutions that power the technologies behind defense, space, and next-generation communications, and we do it with precision, purpose, and pride. Here, your ideas are heard, your expertise is trusted, and your impact is visible from the first design review to the moment our products perform in the most demanding environments on Earth and beyond. You’ll work alongside intelligent, driven people who care deeply about craftsmanship, collaboration, and doing the right thing, in a culture that values growth, integrity, and human connection as much as technical excellence. If you’re looking for a place where your work truly matters, where you can stretch, learn, and build something extraordinary with a team that has your back, Mission Microwave is where your next chapter begins.
