Internship Java Swing Developer information

What does an internship Java Swing developer do?

An Internship Java Swing Developer assists in the development and maintenance of desktop applications using Java Swing, a graphical user interface toolkit. Interns in this role typically work under the guidance of senior developers to design, implement, and test user interface components. They may also help in debugging software, writing documentation, and learning best practices in Java programming. This internship is ideal for students or recent graduates looking to gain hands-on experience in desktop application development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship Java Swing developer?

To thrive as an Internship Java Swing Developer, you need a solid understanding of Java programming, object-oriented principles, and basic UI/UX concepts, typically gained through coursework or personal projects. Familiarity with the Java Swing framework, version control systems like Git, and exposure to integrated development environments (IDEs) such as Eclipse or IntelliJ IDEA are commonly expected. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate effectively with team members help interns stand out. These skills ensure the delivery of functional, user-friendly applications and successful integration into software development teams.

What are some common challenges faced by internship Java Swing developers in their first projects?

Internship Java Swing Developers often encounter challenges related to understanding legacy codebases and adapting to established coding standards within their teams. Since Swing is an older GUI framework, integrating modern design principles and troubleshooting compatibility issues can be tricky. Interns are also expected to collaborate closely with senior developers and testers, which requires effective communication and a willingness to learn from feedback. Balancing learning new technologies while meeting project deadlines is another common hurdle, but supportive mentorship and clear task breakdowns typically help interns succeed.

Palantir

Job description

A World-Changing Company

Palantir builds the world's leading software for data-driven decisions and operations. By bringing the right data to the people who need it, our platforms empower our partners to develop lifesaving drugs, forecast supply chain disruptions, locate missing children, and more.

The Role

Software Engineers at Palantir build software at scale to transform how organizations around the world use data. As a Defense Tech Software Engineer Intern, you'll have an opportunity to grow more quickly than you ever envisioned, as you contribute high-quality code directly to Palantir's Gotham product. Palantir's defense product vertical builds mission-critical products for the modern warfighter, enabling them to securely integrate and visualize their data, perform rich analyses, and build sophisticated, full-fledged programs such as common operating pictures, alert-triaging inboxes, and resource allocation planning tools driven by rich-ML models. Our customers use our defense offering to drive core operations within their organizations - these programs are relied upon for daily operations in the command centers and battlefronts of militaries across the world.

Palantir's Product Development organization is made up of small teams of Software Engineers, each focusing on a specific aspect of a product. For example, you might join a team that builds geospatial mapping tools for mission critical operations, or a component of the Gotham release infrastructure. We encourage communication and collaboration among teams to share context, skills, and experience, so you'll learn about many different aspects of each product.

Core Responsibilities

As a Defense Tech Intern - you will be supporting work specifically focusing on delivering our Palantir Defense capabilities to our most critical mission partners. You'll be involved throughout the product lifecycle - from idea generation, design, and prototyping to execution and shipping. You'll be paired with a mentor dedicated to your growth and success. You'll collaborate closely with technical and non-technical counterparts to understand our customers' problems and build products that tackle them.

SWE principles include:

  • Ownership: We see projects through from beginning to end in spite of obstacles we may encounter.
  • Collaboration: We work internally with people from a variety of backgrounds - such as other Software Engineers, Product Managers, Designers and Product Reliability Engineers. We also partner with our business development teams (Forward Deployed Engineers, Deployment Strategists) in order to understand and solve our customers' problems.
  • Trust: We trust each other to effectively handle time and priorities, and don't micromanage. We want people to have the space to think for themselves, while feeling supported by their team.

Technologies We Use

It doesn't matter what languages you know when you join us, but it does matter that you can write clean, effective code and learn new languages quickly. Our software is constantly evolving, so we need engineers who can do the same. Alongside peers that bring diverse experience - whether you're a former university TA, switched to CS recently, or are a hackathon enthusiast - you'll build your skills to apply the best technology to solve a given problem. Right now, we use:

  • Varying languages, including Java and Go for backend and Typescript for frontend
  • Open-source technologies like Cassandra, Spark, Elasticsearch, React, and Redux
  • Industry-standard build tooling, including Gradle and GitHub

What We Value

  • Ability to communicate and collaborate with a variety of individuals, including engineers, users and non-technical team members.
  • Willingness to learn and make decisions independently, and the ability to ask questions when needed.

What We Require

  • Engineering background in fields such as Computer Science, Mathematics, Software Engineering, and Physics.
  • Familiarity with data structures, storage systems, cloud infrastructure, front-end frameworks, and other technical tools.
  • Active US Security clearance, or eligibility and willingness to obtain a US Security clearance prior to start of internship.
  • Experience coding in programming languages, such as Java, C++, Python, JavaScript, or similar languages.
  • Must be planning on graduating in 2028. This should be your final internship before graduating.

To apply, please submit the following:

  • An updated resume / CV - please do so in PDF format.
  • Thoughtful responses to our application questions.
