As Advocate Health is the nation's 3rd largest nonprofit health system, spanning 6 states, candidates may choose to locate primarily in North Carolina (Charlotte or Winston-Salem), or in Advocate's Midwest region (Northern Illinois, Wisconsin).
Anchored by our aim to improve health care access, quality, and value, we are searching for ideal candidates with the following qualifications:
  • A PhD, or equivalent doctoral degree in health economics, health services research, health policy, finance, actuarial science or related fields. Alternatively, candidates with an MD should also have a Master's degree in one of these fields with at least 10 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience with claims integration and understanding federal and state payment programs (i.e. Medicare Shared Savings/ACO and Managed Medicaid), and evaluation of policy and systems interventions.
  • Track record of research productivity, including publications in peer-reviewed journals and securing extramural funding, or, for candidates from non-academic settings, preparation of white papers, technical reports, and memoranda summarizing results of economic analyses.
  • Quantitative skills, with at least 5 years' experience in the application of econometric/statistical models, financial analysis, and the use of large electronic health records (EHR), insurance claims, health care payment, and administrative data.
  • Proven ability to lead and thrive in heterogeneous teams, as the candidate will need to communicate and work with health system business leaders as well as clinicians, and health outcomes and population science researchers.

Working with the data analytics and affiliated faculty teams of Advocate Health, and the WFUSM Clinical and Translational Science Institute, the person who fills this position will regularly engage in the following Job Tasks:

  • Data Analysis: Leverage access to health care system EHR and administrative data to generate insights into health care interventions, policy, and cost-effectiveness. Apply quantitative skills and utilize econometric/statistical models to analyze and interpret complex health care data and communicate results succinctly to different stakeholders.

  • Collaboration: Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams of faculty and health system staff within the clinical and Managed Health/Value Based Care and population health departments across WFUSM. Embrace a culture of interdisciplinary collaboration to address complex health care challenges.

  • Teaching and Mentoring: Share expertise and knowledge with learners and early-career researchers or non-academic team members seeking careers in economic or actuarial sciences. Provide mentorship and guidance to foster the development of future healthcare researchers and leaders.

  • Health for All Focus: Align research efforts with the aim of improving healthcare access, quality, and value. Contribute to transformative strategies that benefit diverse patient populations.

Funding for this position will come from a mix of 2 streams:
  • Intramural Research: Candidate will use health system data to evaluate new care pathways and other programs and assess cost implications in a time-sensitive fashion. Candidates are not expected to seek extramural funding for these tasks.

  • Extramural Research: Candidates should also actively seek and secure extramural grant funding either by leading research grant proposals or joining proposals submitted by WFUSM faculty, ensuring resources are commensurate with academic rank and research goals.
