Adolescent Guide: Mathematics, Science & Advisory

Knoxville Montessori School is seeking a relational, flexible, and intellectually curious educator to join our Adolescent Program (ages 1218) as a Mathematics, Science, and Advisory Guide beginning in the 20262027 school year.

This position is ideal for an educator who loves working with adolescents, values authentic relationships, and believes learning should be meaningful, hands-on, interdisciplinary, and connected to real life. Strong candidates will be confident teaching mathematics while also supporting integrated science instruction, project-based learning, and executive functioning development.

Our Adolescent Program combines Montessori philosophy with seminar-style instruction, field studies, occupations, entrepreneurship, internships, community engagement, travel, outdoor education, and portfolio-based mastery.

Responsibilities

Mathematics & Science Instruction

  • Teach mathematics lessons and seminars and provide individualized math support for students with varied skill levels and learning profiles (standard middle school and high school math).
  • Support students in building executive functioning skills, organization, planning, and academic independence
  • Develop engaging, project-based math and science learning experiences
  • Incorporate hands-on science, laboratory work, environmental studies, and field experiences
  • Support students in completing portfolio-based credit review work aligned with Tennessee graduation requirements
  • Use assessment data and observation to identify student needs and provide intervention/support

Advisory & Student Support

  • Serve as advisor for a small group of adolescent students
  • Build strong relationships with students and families
  • Support student goal-setting, progress monitoring, internships, and community involvement
  • Communicate regularly with families regarding academic and social-emotional growth
  • Collaborate with administration and support staff regarding student needs

Community & Program Responsibilities

  • Participate in student trips, outdoor experiences, and community events
  • Support occupations, micro-economy projects, entrepreneurship, and experiential learning opportunities
  • Collaborate closely with the Adolescent team and broader school community
  • Contribute to maintaining a prepared environment rooted in Montessori values, respect, and responsibility
  • Participate in professional development, reflection, and ongoing program growth

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree required
  • Strong mathematics background required
  • Experience teaching adolescents in grades 712 preferred
  • Experience with project-based, experiential, alternative, or Montessori education preferred
  • Experience supporting neurodivergent learners and students with executive functioning challenges strongly preferred
  • Montessori adolescent credential (AMI, AMS, or MACTE) preferred; willingness to pursue Montessori training required
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
  • Collaborative, reflective, and growth-oriented mindset
