The
Probabilistic Safety Analysis (PSA) Engineer III supports Holtec's advanced reactor development by leading probabilistic safety analysis (PSA) efforts for the SMR-300 program. This role is part of a multidisciplinary engineering team responsible for risk-informed design, safety analysis, and licensing of next-generation nuclear technology. The position requires deep technical expertise in PSA and thermal-hydraulic modeling, along with the ability to translate complex risk insights into actionable design improvements within a fast-paced, highly regulated environment.
Location: Camden, NJ (On-site) - Relocation assistance available!
Primary Responsibilities:
- Lead development of PSA models and supporting thermal-hydraulic analyses for risk-informed design and licensing
- Develop Level 1 and Level 2 PRA models for internal and external events across full power and shutdown conditions
- Perform thermal-hydraulic modeling (RELAP5-3D, MELCOR) to simulate core and containment response in severe accident scenarios
- Develop and quantify event trees and fault trees to evaluate key risk metrics such as core damage frequency (CDF) and large release frequency (LRF)
- Maintain and update PSA models as SMR-300 design evolves
- Apply PSA results to support risk-informed programs (e.g., RTNSS, D-RAP, 10 CFR 50.69 categorization)
- Partner with design engineers to integrate PSA insights into system and plant design decisions
- Mentor junior engineers on PSA methodologies, tools, and best practices
- Ensure technical accuracy, quality, and consistency across all PSA deliverables
- Support regulatory interactions and documentation related to safety analysis and licensing
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
- 6-10 years of experience in PSA and/or thermal-hydraulic safety analysis within the nuclear industry
- Strong understanding of light water reactor (LWR) thermal-hydraulic behavior
- Expertise with PSA and modeling tools (e.g., CAFTA, SAPHIRE, RiskSpectrum, RELAP5-3D, MELCOR)
- Experience with PSA specialty areas such as external hazards (fire, flood, seismic) or low power/shutdown analysis preferred
- Knowledge of PSA regulatory frameworks and ASME/ANS PRA standards
- Strong analytical, technical writing, and communication skills
- Ability to work cross-functionally in a complex engineering environment
- Eligible to work under 10 CFR Part 810
