Internship Imaging Analyst information

What is an internship imaging analyst?

An Internship Imaging Analyst is a student or recent graduate who assists with the analysis and interpretation of images, often in fields like healthcare, research, or engineering. They work under supervision to process and evaluate digital images using specialized software, supporting projects that may involve medical imaging, satellite imagery, or other visual data. The role helps interns gain practical experience in image analysis techniques, data handling, and reporting findings, preparing them for future careers in imaging science or related fields.

What types of projects and responsibilities can an internship imaging analyst expect during their internship?

As an Internship Imaging Analyst, you can expect to assist with processing, analyzing, and interpreting medical or scientific images using specialized software. Typical responsibilities include supporting data acquisition, preparing image datasets for review, conducting quality control checks, and collaborating with senior analysts or researchers on research studies. Interns often gain hands-on experience with imaging modalities such as MRI, CT, or microscopy, and contribute to documentation or presentations. This role offers a valuable opportunity to learn industry-standard tools, work as part of a multidisciplinary team, and build a strong foundation for future roles in imaging analysis or related fields.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship imaging analyst?

To thrive as an Internship Imaging Analyst, you need a background in science or engineering, familiarity with image processing concepts, and strong analytical skills, often supported by current enrollment in a relevant degree program. Hands-on experience with software tools such as MATLAB, ImageJ, or Python for image analysis, and familiarity with imaging hardware are typically required. Attention to detail, effective communication, and problem-solving abilities help interns stand out when interpreting data and collaborating with research teams. These skills ensure accurate analysis, clear reporting, and effective teamwork in supporting research or clinical imaging projects.

What is the difference between Internship Imaging Analyst vs Imaging Technician?

AspectInternship Imaging AnalystImaging Technician
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing or completed relevant coursework or certificationsHigh school diploma or equivalent; technical certifications often preferred
Work EnvironmentInternship setting, often in healthcare, research, or imaging labsClinical or hospital settings, imaging centers, or labs
Employer & Industry UsageHospitals, research institutions, imaging companiesMedical facilities, radiology departments, diagnostic labs

Internship Imaging Analysts are usually students or recent graduates gaining experience in imaging analysis, while Imaging Technicians are trained professionals performing imaging procedures. Both roles involve working with imaging equipment, but the internship is more educational, whereas the technician role is more hands-on and operational.

Department:37043010 - SR-CHEM-IZARD LAB

Classification Title:

OPS Sponsored Projects Non-Clerical

Classification Minimum Requirements:
  • The candidate should be a student enrolled in a bachelor's program in an appropriate area of specialization.
  • Ability to work 15-20 hours per week.
Job Description:

Join a dynamic structural biology group at the Wertheim UF Scripps Institute, where we push the boundaries of molecular visualization and membrane biology. Our lab integrates cutting-edge cryoEM, membrane biophysics, and infection/immunity research to redefine how receptors like integrins, GPCRs, and adhesion complexes are regulated. This position offers the opportunity to drive high-impact projects, publish in top journals, and grow your expertise in method development and biological discovery.

About this opportunity

Successful candidates will work in a cutting-edge research environment with new state-of-the-art facilities. The laboratory has outstanding cell biology, molecular biology, protein expression, purification, biochemistry, cryogenic electron microscopy, and protein crystallography facilities. The laboratory has access to many exceptional Cores, facilitating basic research and drug development. The unique infrastructure includes the application of unique chemical, genomic, proteomic, informatics, and high-throughput screening and engineering tools for discovering novel biomolecules.

CryoEM at UF-Scripps

Tina Izard installed the first 300 kV cryo Atomic Resolution Microscope (cryoARM300) in the Americas (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xdVxAN8xy1w&feature=youtu.be) and has plenty of microscope time dedicated to the laboratory staff. This state-of-the-art transmission electron microscope is a 300 kV high-resolution microscope capable of carrying out cryogenic electron microscopy studies by providing atomic resolution for structural studies involving single particle analyses. The transmission electron microscope is equipped with a new and improved Gatan K3 direct electron detector camera with better DQE, a larger field of view (24 Megapixels - 5,760 x 4,092), and faster (3.75 times that of the K2 camera). The direct detection devices are exquisitely sensitive, produce high signal-to-noise images, and are ideal for high-resolution studies.

X-ray crystallography at UF-Scripps

The lab has access to SER-CAT beamlines at Sector 22 of the Advanced Photon Source, including modern insertion device lines (22-ID-D, variable wavelength, and 22-ID-E, fixed wavelength) as well as a bending magnet line (22-BM) for macromolecular crystallography. These facilities are equipped with updated optics and detectors, and fall under current APS upgrades, ensuring high performance for structural biology projects.

The lab has access to a HighFlux X-ray diffraction system, specifically a Rigaku MicroMax-007 HF, a second-generation microfocus rotating anode generator, and a mar345 Image Plate detector. An Osmic VariMax optics system and the Proteros Free Mounting System can be used to control the humidity and optimize diffraction characteristics, including resolution, mosaicity, anisotropy, and reduced X-ray background.

Intellectual environment

The Wertheim UF Scripps Institute shares its Jupiter campus with the Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience (MPFI), North America's only Max Planck Institute. MPFI is internationally recognized for innovation in imaging and neuroscience, and its presence creates a unique, highly collaborative research environment. Laboratory staff benefit from joint seminars, shared facilities, interdisciplinary collaborations, and daily interaction with world-class scientists across structural biology, chemical biology, and neuroscience. This close partnership expands opportunities for discovery and professional growth beyond what most academic campuses offer.

Why Jupiter, Florida?

The Wertheim UF Scripps Institute is located in Jupiter, Florida, a vibrant coastal community in Palm Beach County. Jupiter offers an outstanding quality of life with year-round sunshine, beautiful beaches, outdoor recreation, and a safe, family-friendly atmosphere. The area combines the advantages of a relaxed lifestyle with proximity to Miami and Orlando for cultural and professional opportunities. Florida has no state income tax, making post-doctoral salaries go further, and the cost of living in northern Palm Beach County is favorable compared to many other significant research hubs. The campus itself is part of a growing biotech corridor that includes Max Planck Florida, providing an interdisciplinary, collaborative environment with cutting-edge science in an exceptional location.

About University of Florida

Sourced by ZipRecruiter

The University of Florida is one of the top ranked public universities in the United States (ranked top 5 amongst public universities in 2023 US news and world report). It is one of only a few comprehensive universities, having medical, veterinary, dental, nursing, public health, and engineering disciplines all co-localized on the same, contiguous campus to facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration. Gainesville is located in the northern region of Florida, within 1-1.5 hours of each coast, and just 1.5-2 hours to Orlando and Tampa. It is a small to medium-sized city with a low cost of living, excellent public and private schools, and southern hospitality. While Gainesville is widely recognized as the home of the Gators, it is quickly becoming known as a center for innovation and a place with a lifestyle that's comfortable for families, yet attractive for young professionals.
