Job description

Job Overview

Works with the racing officials, trainers, and horse identifier to record official times for horses that run on a particular schedule for various distances.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for working in a booth or stand next to racetrack and using a stopwatch device to precisely time workouts for horses.
  • Coordinates with horse identifier and outriders to precisely time the start and finish of the workout.
  • Records and maintains workout records.
  • Communicates official workout results/records to racing stewards, officials, trainers, and vets.
  • Assures accuracy of training time records as they will be used in various outlets including The Racing Form.
  • Enhances the relationship between the horse trainers, employees, and management by identifying any issues or concerns and supporting a cooperative environment that is safe for all humans and animals.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Minimum 3 years in racing industry.
  • Minimum 2 years of direct experience clocking horses running various distances.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred but not required.
  • Must be able to work effectively with peers, staff members, and regulatory agency personnel.
  • Basic computer skills required.
  • Good eyesight in various lighting such as before dawn, dawn, and daylight.
  • Good written and oral communication skills required.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus, including using binoculars to see objects at a distance; or decipher minute differences between objects, and do so during various degrees of light/darkness Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions such as cold, heat, wind and rain.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to risks associated with travel between buildings and back and forth to other areas as may be required due to business demands. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, including second-hand environmental smoke.

Licenses, Certifications, Registration: Requires a PMW Occupational License.
