Position Description

At HCC, team members are integral to the Research & Innovation Center, contributing to a dynamic environment of diverse projects while collaborating with colleagues across HCC companies, Virginia Tech, suppliers, and other research centers. The Sr. Advanced Manufacturing Engineer will help solve complex manufacturing challenges through mechanical design, advanced automation, process monitoring and control, and the application of new technologies. This role will be particularly focused on mechanical design and SolidWorks, while also supporting controls and systems integration across multiple projects. The ideal candidate will bring strong manufacturing and design experience, comfort working through ambiguity, and the adaptability and communication skills needed to partner effectively across the organization. As a senior member of the team, this individual will also provide technical guidance and mentorship to engineers, interns, and colleagues across HCC operating companies.

Responsibilities:

  • Transform customer specifications into proof-of-concept demonstrations.
  • Assist in design of factory automation and coordinated systems including hardware integration and programming using off the shelf industrial automation hardware and drives (Siemens, Rockwell, etc.).
  • Contribute to overall design and analysis using available technology tools and analytical methods (brainstorming, thought experimentation, etc.).
  • Collaborate with Mechanical Design and Manufacturing Engineers to optimize system performance and machine process state sequencing to provide intuitive machine controls.
  • Genuine enthusiasm for the application of research to adding value to manufacturing processes and product development.
  • Employ best engineering practices in the conception, design, and analysis of automated solutions.
  • Provide training to users in the operation and diagnostics of the systems as Subject Matter Expert
  • Maintain a safe working environment and utilize safe work practices in the office, manufacturing spaces, and at production facilities.
  • Collaborate and support partner companies' partners throughout project lifecycle.
  • Experience with the implementation of advanced analytical and control techniques such as statistical process control, model predictive control, artificial intelligence, machine learning, precision motion control of mechanisms, etc.
  • Experience collaborating with multiple shareholders from partnering companies.
  • Establish and maintain a network within the partnering companies and collaborative partners.
  • Assume responsibility to continually improve your efficiency and skills.
  • Participate in user groups and industrial societies.


 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical, or similar engineering.
  • 7+ years of experience within a manufacturing environment, with team leadership, project management, and tool & fixture design (SolidWorks or applicable CAD software) experience with foundation in SolidWorks. Fabrication, welding, controls, and/or programming knowledge a plus.
  • Holistic approach to advanced manufacturing systems design & implementation, including mechanical design, system analysis, inspection requirements, and control strategies.
  • Exposure to manufacturing automation systems, utilizing vision, robotics, sensors, and data analysis.
    Experience implementing Industrial Internet of Things (IIOT) related technologies to develop adaptive processes utilizing actionable data-based algorithms. (Industry 4.0)
  • Effective communicator with diverse teams and stakeholders.
  • Excels at problem definition; able to work effectively with open ended or ambiguous problem statements and/or applications and be comfortable in adapting strategies to achieve results.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; clearly conveys ideas at both technical and non-technical levels; must be an active listener.
  • Exposure to factory automation and coordinated drive systems including hardware integration and programming using off the shelf industrial automation hardware and drives (Siemens, Rockwell, etc.). 
  • Contribute to overall (systems, electrical & mechanical) design and analysis using available technology tools (such as, SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Excel, etc.) and analytical methods (brainstorming, thought experimentation, etc.).
  • Employ best engineering practices in the conception, design, and analysis of automated solutions.  
  • Approaches work with a collaborative, team first mentality; proactive, positive with a can-do attitude.
  • An effective steward of project budgets and schedules.  Project Management and Capex purchasing experience a plus.
  • Ability to travel 25% of the time.
