Job description

Are you excited about building data platforms that power the next generation of robotics at Amazon? The Cosmos team is looking for a Software Development Engineer I to help build and scale our real-time data infrastructure that collects, processes, and delivers telemetry from robotic workcells across Amazon's fulfillment network.

As a Software Engineer on Cosmos, you will work on the systems that ingest millions of events per day from robotic equipment, process them through streaming pipelines, and land them in our data lake where they drive operational insights and business decisions. Our stack includes Java and TypeScript services deployed via CDK, with streaming powered by Kinesis and Flink, and analytics via Athena. You will contribute to services that engineering teams, operations, and business intelligence rely on to monitor and optimize workcell performance at scale.

This is an opportunity to work at the intersection of robotics, data engineering, and distributed systems in a fast-paced, high-impact environment.

Key job responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and maintain components of the Cosmos data pipeline, including event ingestion, stream processing, and data lake storage
  • Write clean, well-tested production code to support real-time and batch data processing
  • Collaborate with robotics engineering teams to onboard new event types and data models into the Cosmos platform
  • Participate in operational excellence activities including monitoring, alarming, and on-call support for team-owned services
  • Contribute to code reviews, design discussions, and sprint planning within an agile development team
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues in distributed systems, working across service boundaries when needed
A day in the life

You will start your day reviewing metrics and alarms for the services you own, then move into writing code for a new feature or bug fix. You might pair with a teammate to review a design for a new event model, then test your changes in a pre-production environment. You will collaborate closely with robotics engineers, data scientists, and BI engineers who consume Cosmos data. Your work directly impacts how Amazon monitors, analyzes, and improves robotic workcell performance in fulfillment centers around the world.

About the team

Cosmos is the central data platform for Amazon Robotics workcell telemetry. We collect events from robotic equipment, process them through streaming pipelines built on Kinesis and Flink, and deliver structured data to our data lake for analytics via Athena and real-time monitoring. Our customers include robotics engineering teams, operations, and business intelligence. We are a collaborative, engineering-driven team that values ownership, operational excellence, and continuous learning.

Basic Qualifications
  • 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
  • 2+ years of non-internship design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
  • 1+ years of software development engineer or related occupational experience
  • 1+ years of designing and developing large-scale, multi-tiered, multi-threaded, embedded or distributed software applications, tools, systems, and services using: C#, C++, Java, or Perl experience
  • 1+ years of Object Oriented Design experience
  • Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field
  • Experience programming with at least one software programming language
Preferred Qualifications
  • 3+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
  • Experience building or operating real-time data pipelines using Apache Flink, Amazon Kinesis, or similar stream-processing frameworks in a production environment
  • Experience designing or maintaining data solutions using relational databases, data warehouses (e.g., Redshift), or data lake architectures (e.g., S3, Iceberg, Hive)
  • Experience deploying and operating containerized services on Amazon ECS or similar container orchestration platforms
