What does an internship HiL test engineer do?

An Internship HiL (Hardware-in-the-Loop) Test Engineer assists in testing embedded systems by simulating real-world environments using specialized hardware and software. They help design, set up, and execute tests to validate the performance and reliability of automotive or industrial control systems. Interns often work with test benches, write test scripts, analyze data, and document results, supporting the engineering team in ensuring product quality. This role provides valuable hands-on experience in both hardware and software aspects of system testing.

What are some common challenges faced by internship HiL test engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Internship HiL (Hardware-in-the-Loop) Test Engineers often encounter challenges such as understanding complex testing frameworks, learning to work with specialized simulation equipment, and interpreting test results accurately. It can also be a steep learning curve to grasp the integration of hardware and software systems in automotive or aerospace environments. To address these challenges, interns are encouraged to ask questions, actively seek mentorship from experienced engineers, and participate in team meetings to clarify uncertainties. Hands-on practice and thorough documentation review can further help interns build confidence and competence in the role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship HiL test engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship HiL (Hardware-in-the-Loop) Test Engineer, you generally need a background in electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field, along with a solid understanding of embedded systems and control theory. Familiarity with HiL test platforms such as dSPACE or NI, experience using MATLAB/Simulink, and basic programming skills (e.g., Python, C/C++) are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication skills help interns excel in diagnosing issues and collaborating with development teams. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring robust testing processes, identifying system defects early, and supporting the development of reliable automotive or industrial control systems.

The successful candidate will develop and execute comprehensive test strategies that ensure products meet stringent military performance, reliability, environmental, and interoperability requirements.

Working as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team, the Senior Electrical Test Engineer will lead electrical integration activities from prototype development through qualification and production while interfacing directly with systems engineering, hardware design, software development, manufacturing, quality, and government customers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute electrical integration, verification, validation, qualification, and production acceptance test plans and procedures.
  • Design, develop, and fabricate electrical and mechanical test fixtures, interface adapters, harnesses, and breakout boxes to support engineering development, subsystem integration, environmental qualification, and production acceptance testing. Coordinate fixture requirements with hardware design, manufacturing, and quality engineering to ensure repeatable and reliable test execution.
  • Design and implement electrical test architectures for complex defense electronic systems.
  • Develop automated test solutions using LabVIEW, TestStand, MATLAB, Python, or equivalent software tools.
  • Integrate and troubleshoot electrical hardware at the board, subsystem, LRU, and system levels.
  • Perform verification testing using engineering laboratory instrumentation including:
    • Oscilloscopes, Spectrum Analyzers, Vector Network Analyzers, Signal Generators Logic Analyzers, Power Supplies, Electronic Loads.
  • Support system integration activities for military communication systems, RF subsystems, embedded processors, and digital electronics.
  • Analyze electrical performance, identify root cause of failures, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Support environmental qualification testing in accordance with military standards.
  • Perform EMI/EMC pre-compliance and qualification testing.
  • Support Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) and system integration laboratories.
  • Develop automated data acquisition, analysis, and reporting tools.
  • Prepare technical documentation supporting customer design reviews and qualification programs.
  • Support Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), System Acceptance Testing (SAT), and customer witness testing.
  • Interface directly with U.S. Government customers, prime contractors, subcontractors, and suppliers.
  • Mentor junior engineers and technicians while providing technical leadership during integration and test activities.

Clearance Qualifications

  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance.
