What is an internship in GraphQL?

An Internship in GraphQL is a temporary position, often for students or recent graduates, where individuals get hands-on experience working with GraphQL, a query language for APIs. During the internship, participants typically learn how to design, implement, and test GraphQL APIs, as well as integrate them with frontend or backend systems. The role helps interns develop technical skills in software development, teamwork, and problem-solving, often under the guidance of experienced engineers. Interns may also contribute to real-world projects, attend training sessions, and receive mentorship. This experience can be a valuable stepping stone toward a career in software engineering or API development.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect during a GraphQL internship?

During a GraphQL internship, you will likely work on designing, building, and optimizing APIs using the GraphQL query language. Common responsibilities include collaborating with backend and frontend teams to define data requirements, writing schema definitions, and implementing resolvers. Interns often assist with debugging, testing, and documenting APIs, while also learning best practices for security and performance. This role is a great way to gain hands-on experience in modern API development and work in cross-functional teams that value communication and innovation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a GraphQL intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a GraphQL Intern, you need foundational knowledge of JavaScript, APIs, and familiarity with GraphQL concepts, often supported by coursework or prior project experience. Experience with tools such as Apollo Client/Server, GraphQL Playground, and version control systems like Git is typically expected. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help you collaborate with development teams and learn quickly. These skills are crucial for building efficient, scalable APIs and contributing meaningfully to real-world software projects.

Software Engineer - Applications

Astronomer

Full-time

Job description

Astronomer empowers data teams to bring mission-critical software, analytics, and AI to life and is the company behind Astro, the industry-leading unified DataOps platform powered by Apache Airflow®. Astro accelerates building reliable data products that unlock insights, unleash AI value, and powers data-driven applications. Trusted by more than 800 of the world's leading enterprises, Astronomer lets businesses do more with their data. To learn more, visit www.astronomer.io.
About This Role
Software Engineers on our Applications teams help build the product experience that customers use every day on Astro - from the web console and CLI to the APIs, workflows, and features that make Airflow easier to use, monitor, and manage. The team owns the problems that make Astro a great product: usability, performance, reliability, and the day-to-day feature work that turns customer needs into shipped software across our web application, backend services, and APIs.
We're looking for a Software Engineer to help build and ship that product - on our core web application, our backend services, or both; your specific team will be determined later in the interview process based on need and fit. You'll get hands-on experience with full-stack development, API design, and production feature delivery from day one - with the guidance of senior engineers as you build toward independent ownership. If you're early in your career and want to learn by shipping real, production-grade software that customers use directly, this is the team for you. This posting covers both Software Engineer I and Software Engineer II - the level you're hired at depends on experience and demonstrated scope.
What You'll Do
  • Write, test, and maintain application code - from frontend components (React/TypeScript) to backend services and APIs (Golang and/or TypeScript) - following team standards.
  • Participate in code reviews, growing your judgment on what "production-ready" looks like.
  • Help build and troubleshoot product features, APIs, and UI workflows, working across the stack as needed.
  • Identify and fix bugs, edge cases, and small-scope issues, with support from senior teammates.
  • Maintain technical documentation, design notes, and testing coverage for the features you build.
  • Build working knowledge of distributed systems, service architecture, and Astronomer's product across the application layer.
  • Participate in on-call rotation, pairing with senior engineers to troubleshoot and resolve incidents.
What You'll Bring
  • 0-4 years of experience in software or application engineering (or equivalent internship/coursework for Software Engineer I).
  • Working knowledge of at least one backend language (Go, TypeScript, Python) and familiarity with modern frontend frameworks (React or similar).
  • Understanding of REST/GraphQL API design and how frontend and backend systems communicate.
  • Comfortable with version control (Git) and automated testing practices (unit, integration, or end-to-end).
  • Clear written communication and a habit of documenting your work.
  • Comfortable receiving feedback and iterating quickly.

Nice to Have
  • Hands-on experience with modern frontend tooling (React, state management, component libraries) or backend frameworks.
  • Familiarity with API design, authentication/authorization patterns, or GraphQL.
  • Familiarity with Apache Airflow or other data-orchestration tools.

The estimated salary for this role ranges from $144,000 - $160,000 based on level and geography, along with an equity component and a comprehensive benefits package. This range is merely an estimate; actual compensation may deviate based on skills, experience, and qualifications.
