What is an internship GPS construction?

Internship GPS Construction positions are temporary roles for students or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in using GPS technology within the construction industry. Interns typically assist with surveying, mapping, and site layout using advanced GPS equipment under the supervision of experienced professionals. These internships help participants develop practical skills in construction project management and geospatial technology, preparing them for future roles in the field. Tasks may include data collection, equipment setup, and working with digital plans or modeling software.

What does an internship GPS construction do?

During a GPS construction internship, interns typically work on tasks such as assisting with GPS equipment setup, conducting field surveys, collecting and analyzing spatial data, and supporting project documentation. They often collaborate with site supervisors, engineers, and surveyors to ensure accurate mapping and layout of construction sites. This hands-on experience helps interns develop technical skills with GPS technology while gaining insight into the workflow of construction projects. Interns may also contribute to troubleshooting equipment issues and maintaining data records, providing a well-rounded introduction to the field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship GPS construction?

To thrive as an intern in GPS Construction, you generally need a background in civil engineering, construction management, or a related field, along with basic knowledge of construction principles. Familiarity with GPS surveying equipment, CAD software, and construction project management tools is typically expected. Strong attention to detail, effective communication, and a willingness to learn help interns stand out in this role. These skills and qualities are vital for contributing to accurate project planning, efficient teamwork, and successful execution of construction tasks.

Job description

GPS Surveying Lead โ€“ Build and lead GPS surveying and machine-control capabilities for heavy civil infrastructure projects across Ohio and surrounding regional markets.

Job Overview:

  • Company: Catts Construction Inc
  • Salary/Pay Rate: $75,000 - $85,000+ per year (Salary)
  • Location: Bedford, OH
  • Job/Employment Type: Full Time
  • Project Scope: Heavy Civil, Municipal Concrete, Underground, Heavy Highway, and Structural Bridge Infrastructure

Catts Construction Inc is seeking an experienced GPS Surveying Lead to help bring surveying, GPS machine control, and digital layout capabilities in-house.

This is not a traditional survey-only position. You will take ownership of a growing internal function, working across multiple divisions to support field layout, machine-control accuracy, digital files, grade verification, and surveying needs for municipal, roadway, underground, and bridge projects.

The ideal candidate combines practical field surveying experience with strong technical knowledge of GPS systems and digital construction tools. You will have the opportunity to establish processes, improve how our teams use GPS technology, and help build out this capability as the company continues to grow.

How You Will Make an Impact

  • Establish and maintain accurate horizontal and vertical control for earthwork, drainage, concrete paving, underground utilities, roadway, and bridge construction.
  • Support the setup, calibration, troubleshooting, and accuracy of GPS machine-control systems used on dozers, pavers, and other heavy equipment.
  • Prepare, review, and manage digital project files used by field teams and machine-control systems.
  • Verify grades, elevations, alignments, surface points, and other field data to ensure work matches engineering plans.
  • Conduct field surveys using GPS/GNSS receivers, robotic total stations, digital levels, and related survey equipment.
  • Coordinate with project managers, superintendents, operators, engineers, and field crews to resolve layout or model discrepancies before they impact production.
  • Review engineer-provided files and convert or prepare information for practical field use.
  • Perform topographic, construction layout, and as-built surveying as needed across company divisions.
  • Help establish standardized internal GPS and surveying procedures, documentation, and best practices.
  • Serve as a technical resource for field teams using GPS and machine-control technology.
  • Support future growth of the surveying/GPS function, including the potential development and mentoring of additional team members or interns.

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Proven hands-on surveying experience in heavy civil, highway, municipal, sitework, underground, or related construction environments.
  • Working experience with GPS/GNSS receivers, robotic total stations, digital levels, and construction layout equipment.
  • Strong understanding of grade control, elevations, alignments, surface models, and construction staking.
  • Ability to work with digital construction files and troubleshoot discrepancies between field conditions and design information.
  • Experience working directly with field operations, construction equipment, project managers, superintendents, and operators.
  • Ability to work independently and take ownership of a developing internal function.
  • Comfortable working both in the field and in an office environment.
  • Physical ability to walk rugged terrain, carry survey equipment, and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability and willingness to travel approximately 30% as project needs require, including occasional overnight travel.

Preferred Qualifications & Experience

  • Experience with Trimble GPS, machine-control, or survey technology.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, AutoCAD Civil 3D, Trimble Business Center, or similar survey/design software.
  • Experience configuring or supporting GPS machine-control systems on heavy construction equipment.
  • 5+ years of surveying, GPS, or construction layout experience.
  • Bachelor's or associate degree in Surveying, Geomatics, Civil Engineering, Construction Technology, or a related field.
  • Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) licensure or Certified Survey Technician (CST) credentials.
  • Experience supporting structural bridge or DOT projects.
  • LiDAR scanning, drone surveying, or advanced reality-capture experience is a plus but is not required.

Work Environment & Travel

  • Position is based from the Bedford, Ohio office.
  • Expect a combination of field and office work, generally ranging from approximately 60โ€“70% field and 30โ€“40% office depending on project needs.
  • Travel may include project locations throughout Ohio and occasional support of bridge operations in West Virginia or other regional markets.
  • Overnight travel may be required periodically.
  • Per diem and travel support are provided when applicable to qualifying overnight/project travel.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive salary starting from $75,000 - $85,000+, depending on experience and technical capabilities.
  • Weekly pay cycle with performance-based bonuses and profit-sharing opportunities.
  • 401(k) retirement savings program with employer matching.
  • Comprehensive health coverage including medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Health Savings Account (HSA) option and available life and disability insurance.
  • Paid Time Off including paid holidays, vacation, and sick leave.
  • Professional development with paid safety, technical, and OSHA certifications.
  • Mentor training program to support continued career growth.
  • Per diem and travel support for qualifying project travel.
  • Tech package provided, including a company smartphone or tablet.
  • Company events and team-building opportunities.
