Internship Gear Design Engineer information

What is the difference between Internship Gear Design Engineer vs Gear Design Engineer?

AspectInternship Gear Design EngineerGear Design Engineer
QualificationsEnrolled in or recent graduate of engineering program, basic CAD skillsBachelor's or higher in Mechanical Engineering, experience in gear design
Work EnvironmentInternship setting, supervised, entry-level tasksFull-time professional role, independent project work
Industry UsageInternship programs in manufacturing and automotive companiesDesign and manufacturing firms, automotive, aerospace industries

The main difference is that an Internship Gear Design Engineer is a temporary, entry-level position for students or recent graduates gaining experience, while a Gear Design Engineer is a full-time professional responsible for designing gears, often with more advanced skills and responsibilities.

What types of projects and responsibilities can an internship gear design engineer expect during their internship?

As an Internship Gear Design Engineer, you will typically work on assisting with the design, testing, and analysis of gears and gear systems for various mechanical applications. Interns often support senior engineers by creating CAD models, running simulations, and contributing to prototype assembly and testing. You may also participate in team meetings, collaborate with manufacturing and quality departments, and help document design processes. This hands-on experience allows you to apply academic knowledge to real-world engineering challenges and gain insight into the full product development cycle.

What does an internship gear design engineer do?

An Internship Gear Design Engineer assists in the design, analysis, and testing of gears used in various mechanical systems, such as automotive transmissions or industrial machinery. They work closely with senior engineers to create CAD models, run simulations, and support prototype development. Interns may also help with drafting technical documentation and participating in team meetings. This role provides hands-on experience in mechanical engineering principles and the gear design process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship gear design engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship Gear Design Engineer, you need a strong grasp of mechanical engineering fundamentals, gear theory, and CAD design, often supported by ongoing or completed coursework in mechanical or automotive engineering. Familiarity with CAD software like SolidWorks or CATIA, and simulation tools such as ANSYS, is typically required, and knowledge of industry standards (like AGMA) is beneficial. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication abilities help interns excel in collaborative and technical environments. These skills and qualifications are crucial for designing reliable gear systems, meeting project requirements, and contributing positively to engineering teams.

Job description

Lead the mechanical and electromechanical design of the eTaxi system and its integration onto commercial aircraft, starting with the Embraer E-175. This is a senior, onsite, high-ownership role that spans concept through certification and into production. You will own the mechanical design and the overall system architecture, and coordinate closely with power-electronics, controls, and software specialists rather than personally design every discipline. As a foundational engineering hire, you will help shape the team and technical direction, with a growth path toward the Director of Engineering role.

Key Responsibilities

•      Own the overall eTaxi system architecture and keep a whole-system view across the airframe, landing gear, and APU-fed power chain, working across all engineering disciplines.

•      Lead the mechanical and electromechanical hardware design: drive units, actuation, gearing, and structural brackets.

•      Coordinate the integration of high-voltage power electronics, motor drives, sensors, and embedded controls with the electrical, controls, and software teams.

•      Produce and manage 3D CAD models and production drawings in SolidWorks, applying GD&T per ASME Y14.5 and owning mechanical interface definitions.

•      Perform engineering analysis (hand calculations, FEA, tolerance stack-ups, fatigue, and structural margins) and contribute to system-level trade studies.

•      Drive design reviews and cross-disciplinary requirements definition; oversee qualification and environmental testing (RTCA DO-160).

•      Support FAA certification (STC) and type design data, coordinating with the FAA, ODA, and DERs.

•      Manage supplier and manufacturing interfaces (DFM, FAI), and maintain documentation, configuration control, and traceability per AS9100.

•      Mentor junior engineers and help grow the engineering team.

Required Qualifications

•      Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Electrical, Mechatronics, or Systems Engineering, or equivalent professional experience (advanced degree a plus).

•      10+ years of aerospace or regulated-industry design experience, from concept to production.

•      Deep electromechanical design background (actuation, landing gear, mechanisms, or aircraft systems).

•      Expert SolidWorks proficiency and strong GD&T (ASME Y14.5); a solid analytical foundation (hand calculations, FEA).

•      System-level fluency: comfortable reading electrical schematics and control-system designs and coordinating with electronics, power-electronics, and software teams.

•      Working knowledge of the aircraft-systems certification framework: 14 CFR Part 25, AS9100, RTCA DO-160, and ARP4754A/ARP4761 (or current revisions).

•      Able to work onsite in Dallas / Plano, TX; must qualify as a U.S. Person (ITAR/EAR).
