What does an internship forensic scientist do?

An internship for a forensic scientist typically provides hands-on experience in a laboratory or law enforcement setting, allowing students or recent graduates to apply their academic knowledge to real-world cases. Interns may assist with analyzing evidence, preparing reports, observing autopsies, or learning about various forensic techniques such as DNA analysis, toxicology, and fingerprinting. The internship is designed to build practical skills, enhance understanding of the criminal justice system, and improve employability in the forensic science field.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be an internship forensic scientist?

To thrive as an Internship Forensic Scientist, you need a solid background in biology, chemistry, or a related science field, often supported by relevant coursework or a degree in forensic science. Familiarity with laboratory equipment, evidence handling protocols, and analytical software (such as GC-MS or DNA analysis tools) is typically expected. Attention to detail, critical thinking, and strong written and verbal communication are standout soft skills. These abilities are crucial for ensuring accurate analysis, maintaining evidence integrity, and effectively contributing to legal investigations.

What types of projects or cases are assigned to internship forensic scientists?

Forensic science interns often assist with real-life casework under supervision, which may include tasks like evidence documentation, basic laboratory analysis, and maintaining chain-of-custody records. Interns might also support senior forensic scientists by preparing reagents, logging evidence, or helping with quality control procedures.
