Internship Flight Control System Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship flight control system engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship Flight Control System Engineer, you generally need a solid foundation in aerospace engineering principles, control systems, and programming, often supported by current enrollment in a relevant engineering program. Familiarity with MATLAB/Simulink, C/C++ programming, and exposure to flight simulation software are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving ability, and effective communication skills help you excel in collaborative engineering environments. These skills ensure accurate design, testing, and troubleshooting of flight control systems, contributing to safe and reliable aircraft operations.

What does an internship flight control system engineer do?

An Internship Flight Control System Engineer assists with the design, development, testing, and evaluation of aircraft flight control systems under the guidance of experienced engineers. Responsibilities typically include supporting simulation, analysis, and troubleshooting of control system components, as well as participating in integration and validation activities. Interns often learn to work with advanced software tools and hardware while gaining hands-on experience in aerospace engineering environments. This role provides valuable exposure to the processes and standards used in the aviation industry.

What types of projects and tasks can an internship flight control system engineer expect to work on during their internship?

As an Internship Flight Control System Engineer, you can expect to be involved in a variety of hands-on and collaborative projects. These typically include supporting the design, simulation, and testing of flight control algorithms, assisting with the integration of control systems into aircraft models, and analyzing performance data from test flights. You may also work alongside senior engineers to troubleshoot issues, participate in team meetings, and contribute to technical documentation. This role provides valuable exposure to both the theoretical and practical aspects of aerospace engineering within a dynamic team environment.

What is the difference between Internship Flight Control System Engineer vs Flight Control System Engineer?

AspectInternship Flight Control System EngineerFlight Control System Engineer
QualificationsTypically pursuing or recently completed relevant degree; limited certificationsBachelor's or Master's in aerospace, electrical, or systems engineering; professional certifications preferred
Work EnvironmentInternship programs, supervised, often in research or development labsFull-time, in aerospace companies or research institutions, with project responsibilities
ResponsibilitiesAssisting with design, testing, and analysis under supervisionDesign, develop, and test flight control systems independently or as part of a team

In summary, an Internship Flight Control System Engineer is a trainee gaining hands-on experience, while a Flight Control System Engineer is a professional responsible for designing and maintaining flight control systems in the aerospace industry.

Job description

Company Overview
Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. At Joby, we've been working to make that dream a reality since 2009 and we're now in the final stages of certifying our aircraft with the FAA. With plans to launch our aircraft in the US and Dubai, we're now scaling manufacturing and preparing for the launch of our commercial service.
Overview
Joby Aviation is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Verification Engineer to join our Integrated Flight and Propulsion Control System (IFPCS) team at our Santa Cruz, CA facility. The Verification Engineer will report to the IFPCS Verification Team Lead and will play a key role in advancing the verification of flight and propulsion control system for the JAS4-1 eVTOL aircraft.
The Integrated Flight and Propulsion Control System has responsibility for the aircraft primary flight control functions - including pilot inceptors, flight sensors, data processing and communications, control laws, control surface and propulsion effectors, vehicle navigation, and air data sensors - as well as some vehicle management functions, which are all combined to effect stability, guidance and control of the aircraft.
The position offers the opportunity to apply a broad range of systems and verification engineering skills, with accountabilities spanning requirements verification, Failure Mode and Effects Testing (FMET), test automation, and certification artifact preparation. The program is currently in the late Detailed Design Phase, with a principal focus on system integration, design validation, and verification activities.
Responsibilities
  • Develop, review or contribute to aspects of Verification activities such as test plans, test cases, and test procedures for an integrated Flight Control/Propulsion system
  • Conduct verification activities to confirm aircraft control system behavior, including dynamic aircraft response resulting from real or simulated failures
  • Perform data analyses and test report generation based on results of verification test campaigns
  • Manage problem reports, resolve technical issues, and track findings to closure
  • Collaborate with the Analysis Team on simulation test cases supporting IFPCS program milestones and formal performance reports
  • Develop automation capabilities to support execution of Verification Test Cases
  • Work with the IFPCS team to develop verification test cases as a means of compliance to FAA regulatory requirements
  • Prepare verification artifacts, briefing materials, and technical documentation for design reviews, program reviews, safety-of-flight reports, and regulatory audits
  • Assist in creating Type Certification documents and Verification reports for submittal to Regulatory Authorities
  • Report technical risks identified, and provide idea opportunities associated with IFPCS verification activities
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Product Design, Systems Engineering, Quality, Development Assurance, Airworthiness, and Program Management teams on impacts of the verification activities
  • Provide guidance and mentoring to team members, on any technical expertise related to the development and execution of verification activities

Required
  • Bachelor of Science (or higher) in Engineering, Physics, or Mathematics; Electrical, Mechanical, Aerospace, or Systems Engineering preferred
  • Application of disciplined systems engineering processes, including requirements management, safety assessment concepts
  • Development of requirements-based Verification Test Case and Test Procedures development
  • Experience working in a laboratory test environment
  • Experience in a verification or test engineering role within an aerospace or technology company within complex systems environments
  • Skills and ability to address technical issues, analyze test results, deduce root causes, and provide solutions to engineering problems
  • Familiarity with digital electronic equipment operating in an integrated system
  • Willingness to learn the operation of aerospace equipment applicable to Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft
  • Working knowledge and experience with digital engineering application tools, or the ability to rapidly learn and apply them
