Job description

Location: Cleveland, OH
Cleveland-Cliffs is seeking a motivated and technically curious Applications Development & Support professional to join our Information Technology team as an Associate IT Applications Engineer in Cleveland, Ohio. This role is ideal for an early-career IT candidate who is eager to learn, support, and help maintain critical payroll and workforce applications that underpin our business operations. The successful candidate will bring a solid technical foundation, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively with both technical teams and business stakeholders to ensure system stability, efficient integrations, and ongoing application improvements in a production-focused environment.
Summary of Responsibilities
  • Learn, support, and help maintain various Payroll applications.
  • These include custom applications built on Java/.Net platform and packages applications such as Ceridian Dayforce, Workday, UKG - Kronos and Matrix.
  • Assist in developing and configuring integration and reports.
  • Troubleshoot system issues by gathering information, analyzing logs, and working with senior team members to identify and implement long-term fixes.
  • Participate in testing activities, including functional tests, integration tests, and regression tests.
  • Support ongoing system stability by monitoring jobs, interfaces, and data flows.
  • Assist in integrating application components with databases, automation systems, and enterprise applications.
  • Work closely with business users, and other IT teams to understand requirements and translate them into working capabilities.
  • Help document technical processes and support procedures to ensure maintainability and knowledge transfer.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related technical field (or equivalent coursework demonstrating a strong technical foundation).
  • Clear, confident verbal and written communication skills suitable for working with both technical and business users.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Classroom, project, or internship exposure to object-oriented programming (e.g., C#, Java, or similar).
  • Basic understanding of relational databases or SQL.
  • Willingness to learn complex systems and support various environments.
  • High aptitude in troubleshooting technical issues and developing problem-solving skills.
  • Must work on-site, 5 days per week, in a production-focused environment.
  • Applicants for this position must be currently legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
  • Exposure to or project experience with large corporations.
  • Knowledge of software development practices such as version control (Git), Agile, or basic CI/CD concepts.
  • Experience working with APIs, system integrations, or data exchange formats (REST, XML, JSON).
  • Familiarity with scripting or programming languages used in integration or system logic (e.g., C#, Java, Python).
  • Understanding data structures, basic networking, or system architecture concepts.
  • Curiosity, eagerness to learn, and the ability to collaborate effectively in team-based technical environments.

The salary range for this role is $65,000 to $82,000. An employee's pay within the salary range will be based on numerous factors including, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, experience, skills, geographic location and business or organizational needs.
