Internship Electrical Engineering information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Electrical Engineering Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electrical Engineering Intern, a solid understanding of electrical circuit theory, problem-solving skills, and progress toward a degree in electrical engineering are essential. Familiarity with industry-standard tools like MATLAB, AutoCAD, and circuit simulation software, as well as basic programming knowledge, is typically required. Strong teamwork, communication, and a willingness to learn help an intern stand out in collaborative engineering environments. These competencies enable interns to contribute effectively to projects, adapt quickly, and gain valuable, practical experience for future growth.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect during an Electrical Engineering internship?

As an Electrical Engineering intern, you can expect to work on a variety of projects such as circuit design, product testing, data analysis, and assisting with the development of prototypes. You'll often support senior engineers on larger projects while also having opportunities to take ownership of smaller tasks. Typical daily responsibilities might include drafting schematics, conducting experiments in the lab, troubleshooting hardware, and documenting results. Interns usually collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams, gaining valuable exposure to both engineering best practices and cross-functional teamwork.

What are internship electrical engineering positions?

Internship electrical engineering positions are temporary roles designed for students or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in the field of electrical engineering. These internships typically involve assisting with designing, testing, and analyzing electrical systems and components under the supervision of experienced engineers. Interns gain practical knowledge, industry exposure, and professional networking opportunities, which can be valuable for future employment. These positions are often offered by companies in industries such as electronics, energy, telecommunications, and manufacturing.

Can you make $500,000 as an electrical engineer?

Electrical engineering internships typically do not pay salaries close to $500,000, as such high earnings are usually associated with senior-level positions, specialized roles, or entrepreneurial ventures. Entry-level internships generally offer modest stipends or hourly wages, and earning potential increases with experience, advanced skills, and certifications like PE or PMP. Achieving a $500,000 income as an electrical engineer would require significant career advancement and possibly leadership or consulting roles in high-demand industries.

Which internship is best for electrical engineering students?

The best internship for electrical engineering students typically involves roles in power systems, electronics, or embedded systems, offering hands-on experience with circuit design, testing, and industry-standard tools like MATLAB or AutoCAD. Internships at reputable companies or research institutions that provide mentorship and exposure to real-world projects are highly valuable for skill development and career growth.

Do electrical engineer interns get paid?

Electrical engineering interns typically receive compensation, which can include hourly wages or stipends, depending on the company and location. Paid internships are common in the industry and often require basic skills in circuit design, programming, or testing. Unpaid internships are less common but may be offered for academic credit or specific training programs.

What is the difference between Internship Electrical Engineering vs Electrical Engineer?

AspectInternship Electrical EngineeringElectrical Engineer
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing or recently completed a degree in electrical engineeringBachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related field
Work EnvironmentTemporary, training-focused, often in labs or project sitesFull-time, professional setting, including offices, labs, or field sites
Employer & Industry UsageInternships offered by companies for training and evaluationFull-fledged roles in industries like power, electronics, or telecommunications
Common Search & Comparison IntentUnderstanding entry-level opportunities and training rolesSeeking full-time electrical engineering careers

In summary, an Internship Electrical Engineering is a temporary, training-focused position for students or recent graduates, whereas an Electrical Engineer is a full-time professional role requiring a degree and offering ongoing responsibilities in the electrical industry.

What do you do as an electrical engineering intern?

An electrical engineering intern assists with designing, testing, and analyzing electrical systems and components under supervision. They may work on circuit design, troubleshooting, and documentation using tools like CAD software and oscilloscopes. The role provides hands-on experience and often involves supporting ongoing projects in a professional engineering environment.

Job description

Your Impact

As an intern on the Axon Electrical Engineering team, you will gain hands-on experience alongside senior engineers and mentors. You'll contribute to the design, development, testing, and debugging of cutting-edge electronic circuits that power Axon's products.

Your academic knowledge and engineering curiosity will be put into practice in real-world applications-from prototyping through validation. You'll also collaborate with mechanical and software engineers to help bring world-class products to market.

This is your opportunity to deepen your electronics and product design expertise while supporting technologies that positively impact law enforcement, public safety, and the communities they serve.

What You'll Do

  • Support the TASER electrical engineering team in designing, developing, testing, debugging, and building new products throughout the development cycle.
  • Collaborate with peers and senior engineers to deliver robust electronic designs.
  • Develop and execute test plans, define test methods, and validate designs.
  • Bring up, characterize, and debug systems and circuits using lab tools (oscilloscopes, multimeters, logic analyzers, power supplies, hi-pot testers, etc.).
  • Evaluate and document design outcomes and test results; present findings to design teams for review.
  • Review product design requirements in relation to system objectives.
  • Participate in schematic design of embedded mixed-signal circuits (OrCAD), integrating power supplies, microcontrollers, lighting and display drivers, memory (FLASH/EEPROM), regulators, batteries, high/low-speed interfaces (USB, UART, SPI, IC), RF transceivers, sensors, and analog/digital components.
  • Contribute to PCB design implementations and inspections using Allegro layout tools.
  • Engage in design reviews and inspections, offering constructive feedback while learning key design principles.
  • Assess circuit performance and verify compliance with product and regulatory requirements.

What You Bring

  • College senior majoring in Electrical or Computer Engineering.
  • Strong academic performance with a solid engineering foundation.
  • Ability to apply classroom knowledge to real-world problems through labs, internships, or projects.
  • Knowledge of discrete analog and digital components (RLCs, transistors, diodes, LEDs, voltage regulators, microcontrollers, etc.).
  • Experience designing or integrating circuits in one or more areas:
  • Hands-on bench experience with oscilloscopes, power supplies, multimeters, etc.
  • Ability to read and analyze component datasheets and technical documentation.
  • Proficiency with documentation and presentation tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Cultural alignment to Axon Company Values: https://global.axon.com/company/values

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience developing embedded hardware systems (capstone, internship, or equivalent) in a cross-functional team (EE/FW/ME).
  • Schematic design experience using Cadence/OrCAD Capture or similar tools.
  • Understanding of common power supply topologies (buck, boost, buck-boost, LDOs) and their trade-offs.
  • Soldering experience for PCB population or component replacement during troubleshooting.
