The Louisiana Sea Grant Education Coordinator will lead and coordinate K-12 education and teacher professional learning efforts for the Education & Engagement Unit. Working closely with other team members, departments and units, this role will develop place-based learning efforts, classroom engagements, teacher trainings, educational materials, and manage administrative support on community events and other Education & Engagement programming to address the Sea Grant priority of advancing environmental literacy and workforce development. This position requires organization, collaboration, and strong leadership to successfully launch and sustain existing and emerging programming.


Job Responsibilities:

Plans and coordinates education events, both on the LSU campus and across coastal Louisiana. This includes initiatives like Ocean Commotion, Adopt-a-Pond, Native Fish in the Classroom, and Wetland Days;. Event coordination includes communicating with schools, working with education partners, event set-up and break-down, content delivery, assisting with evaluation, etc. There will be in field coordination with Sea Grant extension personnel to extend educational activities into other regions of Louisiana. (35%)


Creates, coordinates, and organizes educational content (aligned to state standards) that supports existing projects like Ocean Commotion, Coastal Roots, Adopt-a-Pond, Native Fish in the Classroom, and Wetland Days. The candidate will also pursue new opportunities to broaden Sea Grant's work with Louisiana K-12 audiences. Educational content could include lesson plans, web content, videos, infographics, one-pagers, conference displays, community outreach displays, etc. (25%)


Participates in the planning and preparation for adult-centered learning opportunities, including the LaDIA program (LaDIA Fellows, Coastal Connections Competition, Graduate Research Scholars, and SciComm Summit program) and teacher professional development. The individual will take charge of event planning; serving as point-of-contact before, during and after event; serving as a trainer when needed; other coordination duties as needed; and supervises LSG personnel, faculty, graduate students, and school teachers supporting tasks with education activities. (20%)


Develops, organizes, and supervises education endeavors highlighting LSG-supported research activities, both on the LSU campus and throughout parts of coastal Louisiana. Directs researcher-generated K-12 education efforts and connects them with teachers through professional development opportunities and educational conference presentations. Supervises 2-4 students providing support to LA Sea Grant Education and Engagement program. (10%)

Knowledge of state and national education standards. Knowledge of coastal Louisiana.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Ecology, Education, Engineering, Environmental Science, or Natural Resource Management, or Geography and 2 years experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's degree and 2-8 years experience in education or outreach activities.


Additional Requirements:

Some travel and irregular hours are required (10-15%). A valid Driver's License is required. This position is subject to drug/alcohol testing in accordance with PS-67. This position and/or position's responsibilities require work directly with minors. Finger printing and National Sex Offender Registry check required per FASOP HR-04.
