Viral Vector & Gene Editing
The Viral Vector and Gene Editing Core Facility at the Institute for Pediatric Rare Diseases (IPRD), Florida State University, is a state-of-the-art facility that provides viral vector design, production, and genome editing services to support basic and translational research across the university and beyond. We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Molecular Research Technician to support the day-to-day operations of the Core. The successful candidate will contribute to both service and research activities, including molecular cloning and viral vector production.
Responsibilities
  • Routinely perform molecular cloning and DNA manipulation, including but not limited to restriction digestion and ligation, PCR-based cloning, Gibson Assembly, Golden Gate cloning, and site-directed mutagenesis.
  • Assist in the design and production of viral vectors, including adeno-associated vectors (AAVs) and lentiviral vectors.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date laboratory records, inventories, and databases related to constructs, reagents, and viral stocks.
  • Coordinate ordering and inventory management for laboratory supplies and reagents for Viral Vector Gene Editing auxiliary services.
  • Support general Core operations, including preparation of service materials, quality control of viral vectors, and maintenance of Core archives such as DREADD and optogenetic construct libraries.
  • Contribute to research projects involving CRISPR/Cas9-based gene editing technologies applied to models of neurodegenerative diseases (e.g., Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases).
  • Assist in training students, interns, and new personnel in standard molecular biology techniques. Ensure compliance with laboratory safety protocols and university regulations.
  • Work collaboratively with the Principal Investigator to refine experimental workflows and optimize service delivery.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree (B.S. or B.A.) in molecular biology, biotechnology, biochemistry, or a related life science field.
  • At least two years of hands-on experience with standard molecular biology techniques (e.g., DNA extraction, PCR, gel electrophoresis, plasmid preparation, and cloning). Proficiency in the cloning techniques is required.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with minimal supervision.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree (M.S.) in a relevant field.
  • Significant experience and proficiency in molecular cloning techniques and DNA manipulations.
  • Experience with mammalian cell culture techniques.
  • Prior experience working with viral vectors (AAV, lentivirus) is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with CRISPR/Cas9 or other genome editing platforms.
  • Previous experience in a core facility or service-oriented laboratory environment desired.

$50,000 - $80,000. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
