Job description

Provides temporary support to the cooperative's customer service team while gaining practical experience in the day-to-day operations of an electric utility. The position has similarities to working in a call center and/or banking environment.

This position is a good fit for a student or early-career candidate who wants experience working in a professional office environment, helping customers, solving problems, and learning how an electric distribution cooperative serves its members.

The intern will work alongside experienced customer service employees and assist with a variety of customer requests, account-related tasks, administrative work, and special projects. This is a hands-on internship. The successful candidate should be comfortable communicating with customers, learning new computer systems, handling detailed information, and completing routine work accurately.

What You'll Do

Responsibilities may include:

  • Assist customers by phone, in person, or through other communication channels.
  • Help answer common questions about electric service, accounts, payments, billing, service locations, and cooperative programs.
  • Direct more complex customer questions to the appropriate employee or department.
  • Enter and update customer and account information in company systems.
  • Assist with new-service requests, account changes, payment arrangements, or other routine customer service processes as assigned.
  • Perform data entry, document review, scanning, filing, and other administrative work.
  • Help research and resolve routine customer questions or account discrepancies.
  • Support customer service employees during periods of high call or transaction volume.
  • Assist with special projects involving customer records, reports, communications, or process improvement.
  • Learn how an electric cooperative operates and how customer service works with departments such as operations, engineering, billing, accounting, and dispatch.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of customer and cooperative information.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

What We're Looking For

Candidates should:

  • Be currently enrolled in, or recently graduated from, high school, college, technical school, or another educational program.
  • Have strong communication and customer service skills.
  • Be dependable, professional, and willing to learn.
  • Be comfortable working with computers and learning new software.
  • Have good attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Be able to handle multiple tasks while maintaining accuracy.
  • Work well with customers and coworkers with a wide range of personalities and backgrounds.
  • Be able to remain courteous and professional when helping customers with questions or concerns.

Previous customer service, office, retail, or utility experience is helpful but not required.

Internship Experience

This internship is designed to provide meaningful exposure to the operations of an electric distribution cooperative. In addition to completing regular customer service work, the intern will have opportunities to learn about the cooperative business model, electric utility operations, and the different careers involved in providing reliable electric service to local communities.

Schedule: Normal working hours start at 8:00 am and end at 4:30 pm, Monday-Friday.

Internship Dates/Hours: Interns are limited to 1,000 total work hours, unless otherwise approved by the cooperative.
