Our R&D organization develops sensor-based hardware, platforms, and systems used globally to monitor critical power assets and improve grid reliability. R&D work spans sensors, hardware, firmware, software, and platform technologies supporting a wide range of monitoring applications.
Position Summary
The R&D Engineering Co-Op - Technology & Platform will support hands-on development, testing, and validation of technologies within Qualitrol's Technology and Platform group. This role is ideal for a student interested in applied engineering work, laboratory experimentation, and learning how technologies are developed and validated for real-world industrial applications.
The co-op will work closely with engineers in the Technology and Platform organization and associated Value Streams, and will spend a significant portion of time in the lab supporting sensor evaluation, testing, and data collection activities.
Key Responsibilities
  • Support laboratory testing and evaluation of physical and chemical sensor technologies, including setup, execution, and documentation of experiments.
  • Assist with sensor characterization, calibration activities, and performance testing under varying environmental and operating conditions.
  • Collect, organize, and analyze experimental data to support engineering development and decision-making.
  • Support prototyping and test fixture setup for sensor and platform development activities.
  • Document test procedures, results, and observations in a clear and organized manner.
  • Collaborate with R&D engineers across hardware, mechanical, and systems disciplines.
  • Follow established laboratory safety procedures and engineering best practices.

Learning Objectives
During the co-op assignment, the student will gain experience in:

Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Microsystems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related engineering or applied science discipline.

  • Ability to work methodically, follow procedures, and document results accurately.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Effective communication skills and willingness to work as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Coursework or experience related to sensors, instrumentation, measurement systems, or data acquisition.
  • Prior laboratory, co-op, internship, or project experience involving experimental testing.
  • Familiarity with basic data analysis tools (e.g., Excel, MATLAB, Python, or similar).
  • Interest in industrial, energy, or asset monitoring applications.
  • This is a six-month cooperative education experience anticipated to begin in Fall 2026. Specific start and end dates are flexible and will be aligned with the selected candidate's university co-op schedule and academic requirements.
