Job Description
Interested in gaining hands-on experience in workplace safety, risk management, and emergency preparedness while exploring a career in local government? Join the City of Eau Claire as a Risk Management Intern and help support initiatives that promote employee safety, reduce organizational risk, and strengthen emergency preparedness across City operations. You'll gain valuable experience researching policies, developing safety resources, coordinating projects, analyzing data, and working alongside professionals in risk management, emergency management, public safety, planning, public health, and engineering.
Requirements:
  • Must be currently enrolled or a recent graduate in risk management, construction management, occupational safety and health, emergency management, insurance, public health, or a related field at a college or university
  • Excellent communication skills, organizational skills, and proficiency in multi-tasking
Preferred:
  • OSHA 10-Hour or OSHA 30-Hour General Industry certification preferred; or willingness to obtain certification during the internship.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite

Length of Internship:
  • Approximately 20 hours per week for 20 weeks, flexible scheduling Monday through Friday.

JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION SCOPE
Under general supervision, this position provides administrative and technical support on a variety of projects related to risk management, workplace safety, emergency preparedness, and organizational initiatives. Responsibilities may include assisting with interdepartmental engagement efforts, hazard mitigation planning, safety committee initiatives, safety manual development and updates, training and educational programs, incident and claims analysis, policy research, and other projects that support the City's risk management and safety objectives. This internship offers the opportunity to work alongside experienced professionals in risk management, emergency management, public safety, planning, public health, and engineering while gaining practical experience in local government operations and serving a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Assist with researching, developing, updating, and maintaining the City's Safety Manual, related policies, procedures, and supporting documentation.
Support the implementation and promotion of workplace safety initiatives, employee safety campaigns, and organizational risk reduction programs.
Create, design, and maintain professional graphics, templates, presentations, reports, educational materials, and other communication tools to support risk management, safety, and emergency management initiatives.
Assist with planning, coordinating, facilitating, and documenting meetings for the Safety Team, Emergency Management Team, and other committees or work groups as assigned.
Support emergency management planning activities, including the development, review, revision, and maintenance of emergency operations plans, contact lists, and emergency management information systems.
Conduct research and analyze information related to local hazards, vulnerabilities, risk assessments, best practices, and emerging trends to support planning and program development.
Assist with maintaining documentation and records necessary to support compliance with accreditation standards, regulatory requirements, and departmental initiatives.
Assist in the planning, development, coordination, facilitation, and evaluation of emergency preparedness exercises, drills, and after-action improvement activities.
Provide administrative and technical support for special projects and initiatives related to risk management, workplace safety, emergency management, and community resilience.
Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/CERTIFICATIONS
Must be currently enrolled or a recent graduate in risk management, construction management, occupational safety and health, emergency management, insurance, public health, or a related field at a college or university.
OSHA 10-Hour or OSHA 30-Hour General Industry certification preferred; or willingness to obtain certification during the internship.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite is preferred.
