Job description

Our company is committed to being trusted voices of light and truth reaching hundreds of millions of people worldwide.
The Deseret News (Salt Lake City, Utah), has an immediate opening for a paid six month (Winter/Spring 2026 semesters) photojournalism internship ($14/hr).
The Deseret News is a digital-first, multi-platform newsroom, sharing assignment desk resources and with our sister broadcast partners, KSL-TV (NBC), KSL NewsRadio (ABC).
We provide powerful still images to both Deseret.com, our in-depth branded website with ten million monthly unique visitors, and our breaking news website, KSL.com, with 24 million monthly sessions. Additionally we provide photojournalism for our print products.
The internship will start in early July 2026 and will finish up in early January 2027.
Applicants should have a well-rounded portfolio with at least one picture story. They should also be well-versed in PhotoShop, Lightroom and Photo Mechanic. Interns should be able to edit and send pictures, multimedia and video remotely, and have the ability to write creative, accurate captions under deadline pressure.
Being certified by the FAA with a Part 107 license in order to fly drones for aerial photography is also a bonus, but not required.
Additionally, applicants must have up-to-date automobile insurance and a valid U.S. state-issued drivers' license.
A valid U.S. passport is another item that isn't required, but is helpful because our interns have not only traveled domestically, but internationally as well.
We compete daily with The Salt Lake Tribune, along with several other daily publications and five local television stations. The Deseret News has six photojournalists on staff. Along with our sister television station newsroom there are an additional 16 video photojournalists working for KSL-TV. We win numerous photojournalism awards yearly, both regionally and nationally, as well as NPPA's Best of Photojournalism contest and the University of Missouri School of Journalism's POYi competition.
The Deseret News places a big emphasis on high quality photojournalism, with a special focus on in-depth coverage. There are also opportunities to cover our two major universities in the Big12 Conference, the Utah Jazz (NBA), the Utah Mammoth (NHL), Real Salt Lake (MLS) and occasionally Olympic qualifying events. Utah will host its second Olympic winter games in 2034.
Our interns are provided with a full set of Canon mirrorless gear including long glass, a light kit, cell phone allowance and a MacBook Pro with Verizon hotspots. There is also additional lighting gear along with specialty longer glass available for checkout from our pool equipment. Interns must have reliable vehicles and you will be reimbursed for your mileage at the current IRS rate (2026 is .72 per mile).
We try to give regular feedback but always welcome additional feedback requests.
Chuck Wing, Deseret News Managing Editor for cross-platform news and Director of Photography
The deadline to apply is Monday, March. 16, 2026. Priority consideration will be given to first applicants.
