Position SummaryThis internship provides hands-on experience at the intersection of water supply planning and data analytics. The intern will support projects related to water supply and demand planning and water use efficiency programs. Working with a variety of datasets, the intern will help transform raw information into meaningful insights that support planning, conservation, and data organization.
Learning Opportunities
  • Exposure to real-world applications of data analytics in water supply planning and resource management.
  • Experience working with large utility datasets, including metered water consumption, water loss, and water use efficiency.
  • Refinement and development of skillset working with tools such as Power BI, Excel, SQL, or Python for data analysis and visualization.
  • Insight into how data informs water supply reliability, demand forecasting, and conservation program design.

Examples of Duties
  • Assist with data analysis projects related to water supply, demand trends, and water use efficiency (WUE) programs.
  • Support the evaluation of water use efficiency programs by organizing data, conducting basic analyses, and summarizing findings.
  • Help compile, clean, and validate datasets from sources such as water metering data, billing systems, GIS, and WUE program data.
  • Contribute to the development of reports, dashboards, and visualizations to communicate key metrics and trends.
  • Prepare charts, tables, and summaries for reports and presentations.
  • Work with staff across planning, operations, and conservation teams to understand data needs and support ongoing projects.
  • Document data sources, assumptions, and basic methodologies to support transparency and repeatability.
  • Project work will be structured to support candidate development while meeting ACWD's needs, and may vary depending on what skills and interests the candidate brings to the organization.

Typical Qualifications
Ideal Candidate will have
  • Current enrollment in or recent completion of a degree in data science, computer science, environmental science, engineering, economics, physical sciences or a similar field.
  • Experience with data tools, such as Excel, querying relational databases, and scripting using Python or R.
  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn new tools and methods.
  • Interest in water resources, sustainability, or public utilities.
  • Ability to communicate findings clearly in both written and visual formats.

Additional Qualifications
  • Familiarity with data concepts such as ETL/ELT, data cleaning, version control, data replicability, and data visualization.
  • Familiarity with the scientific method, statistical analysis, and other methods related to finding facts in data.
  • Group project work experience or other work experience demonstrating communication and coordination with team members.
  • Customer service experience.
