Description The Community Development Department is seeking a motivated high school student to participate in an internship focused on Building Inspections, construction trades, and architectural plan review support. This internship provides hands-on exposure to local government operations, building safety, and development processes while developing valuable workplace and technical skills. The intern will assist staff with organizing digital records, performing data entry, and managing electronic documents within the department's permit management software system while gaining valuable experience in local government operations.

Essential Functions Under the supervision of department staff, the intern will: Perform data entry and assist with maintaining records within the department's permit management software system Assist with merging, organizing, and attaching electronic documents and files within project records in the software system Scan, index, and file development-related documents such as permit applications, plats, and plans into the department's electronic record system Help organize and maintain Planning & Zoning and Building Inspection project files Provide general administrative support to Community Development staff as needed Observe staff activities related to building inspections, plan review, and zoning administration when appropriate Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred Skills (Not Required) Coursework in drafting, construction, engineering, or architecture Experience with spreadsheets or database systems Familiarity with scanning or document management systems Learning Opportunities Through this internship, students will: Gain exposure to careers in construction trades, architecture, engineering, planning, and public administration Learn how local governments manage building permits, inspections, and land development records Become familiar with development review processes and permit management systems Gain exposure to careers in construction trades, architecture, engineering, and public service Understand the building permit and inspection process from application to approval Develop workplace skills including organization, data management, and professional communication Benefits of the Internship Hands-on experience in a local government setting Career exploration in building and development fields Professional references upon successful completion Opportunity to fulfill school internship or career pathway requirements Completed application Resume (if available) Education, Experience and Training Currently enrolled in high school 16 years old minimum Interest in construction, architecture, engineering, or public service Basic computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, and document scanning) Ability to follow instructions and work independently Strong attention to detail and organizational skills Reliable, punctual, and professional in appearance and behavior Work Environment Office setting with occasional field observation May involve light lifting of files and documents up to 30 lbs.
