We are seeking a highly motivated Manufacturing Engineering Intern to join our Mishawaka team for the summer. This is a high-priority internship offering hands-on experience with real-world manufacturing challenges, automation, and system integration.

The intern will lead a defined, high-impact project that delivers measurable operational and customer value.

Dexter is the premier manufacturer and supplier of axles, suspension, brakes, doors, venting products, trailer parts, accessories, and towing components serving the commercial trailer, RV, heavy-duty, marine, agriculture, and manufactured housing markets.

Key Responsibilities

The primary project will be the development of a vision-based validation system on the wheel and tire assembly line

  • Design a system positioned above the conveyor to verify correct wheel/tire assemblies post-inflation
  • Identify and validate key product attributes, including:
    • Wheel: color, size, style, bolt pattern
    • Tire: brand, model, size
  • Support integration of vision system outputs with part data and work order systems
  • Capture and link critical traceability data (manufacturer date codes and factory codes)
  • Assist in improving labeling, documentation, and QR-based traceability for customers
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including manufacturing, quality, and IT

  • Developed concept and working model for the vision-based validation system
  • Defined validation logic and attribute recognition approach
