Pay:$800/week paid biweekly ($600/week living stipend + $200additionalmember benefit)

Appalachian Conservation Corps:

Our Individual Placement programworks to connectyoung peopleto conservation service work across Appalachia and neighboring communities in Virginia, West Virginia,Maryland, DC,Ohio, and Pennsylvania.ACC is a program of Conservation Legacy, a nationwide network of conservation organizations.

As an AmeriCorps program, Individual Placements commit to a term of servicein order togain hands-on experience at their placement site, and ACC supports them through their term, as well as provides a variety of benefits to help them succeed in achieving their career goals. Position Summary:

The CulturalLandscapes Inventory(CLI)Individual Placementwill supportPreservation Services.Preservation Services promotes the preservation of cultural landscapes and historic structures through research, planning, and stewardship to parks and historic properties in theNational Park Service (NPS)National Capital Region.

The successful candidate will work with andassisthistorical landscape architects, historians, and other preservation professionals to completeCultural LandscapesInventory(CLI)reportsfor Prince William Forest Park, a15,000-acre parkin theNPSNational Capital Region. This internship opportunityis located inWashington, DC, with options foraremoteorhybrid workschedule,andwill focus onoffice workwithpossiblefielddocumentationexperience.

The internship involvespreparingCultural Landscapes Inventory (CLI) reportsand database entries forthree cabin camps at Prince William Forest Park.The cabin camps were constructed as part ofNew Deal-eraRecreation Demonstration Areaprogram and includedevelopmentand usefromtheir completion,toWorld War II,tothe National Park Service's Mission 66 andParkscapeUSAprograms,andextendto the present day.The development of the reports and data entry into theCultural Resources Inventory System (CRIS) databaseis critical to meeting requirements of Section 106 and 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act.This opportunity will allow the intern to learn about andparticipatein a preservation program by working directly with Federal cultural resource professionals in the National Capital Region - Preservation Services.

Essential roles and responsibilities include:

  • Researching secondary sourcesand developing writtennarratives;

  • Identifyinganddescribing cultural landscape characteristics and features;

  • Describing alandscape's historical significance according to National Register criteria;

  • Evaluating characteristics and features that contribute to a landscape's significance

  • Participating in landscape condition discussions withNPSstaff;

  • Photography management with Adobe Creative Suitesoftware;

  • Editing maps using GISand/or Adobe Creative Suite software

General Qualifications:

To qualify, you must be between the ages of 18 and 30, and a US citizen that has received a high school diploma or GED. All offers of employment are conditional upon completion of an acceptable check of the National Sex Offender Public Registry and federal criminal background check. Must be eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award. In addition, applicants must:

  • Possess a valid driver's license

Desired Skills/Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in historic preservation, landscape architecture, architecture, urban planning,geography, or historic archaeology with a Mid-Atlantic focus

Schedule:

  • Thispositionisfull-time,40 hour/week

  • Typically, this position is expected to serve Monday to Friday, but exact service schedules may vary. A half hour lunch break will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service.

  • Eligibility for the Public Land Corps Hiring Authority upon successful completion - noncompetitive hiring status for two years when applying for federal positions.

  • Federal student loan forbearanceand interest payoff

  • Member Assistance Program- 3 free sessions of support with a counseling or work-life balance specialist

  • Additionalsubject-specificcertifications and trainingsmay be offered (Chainsawtraining, pesticides,etc.)

  • Depending upon the academicinstitution and program, positions mayfulfill internship requirements

  • Professional development opportunities (mentorship, resume support, alumnilistserv, etc.) and exposure to resourcemanagementcareer paths

Evaluation and Reporting:

As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.

Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
