Salary Range: $18-$20 per hour

JOB TITLE: Safety Intern

EMPLOYER: LAUKOA

BUSINESS SERVICE LINE: PAC – Construction/Operations & Maintenance

REPORTS TO: Site Safety Health Officer (SSHO)

EFFECTIVE DATE: 1/2/2025 – The internship will run for the semesters duration with the option of extending if LAUKOA and the student agree it would be beneficial for both parties concerned.

SUMMARY: We are seeking a highly motivated and technically skilled Safety Intern to join our team. As an intern, you will be a part of promoting and maintaining a safe environment on construction sites and Operations & Maintenance sites in Hawaii. You will have the opportunity to have a hands-on experience working alongside our experienced Safety personnel, Superintendents, Quality Control and Project Managers and contribute to the successful completion of projects while prioritizing the well-being of all personnel.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for identifying hazardous workplace conditions.
  • Being involved in daily jobsite inspections to identify hazards, unsafe conditions and non-compliance with safety regulations.
  • Reporting and record keeping of daily audits.
  • Assisting in accident, incident or near miss investigations to determine root causes and recommend corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Takes samples and measurements of hazardous materials, and coordinates the removal of physical, biological and chemical hazards.
  • Participates and develops the training of employees on safety policies, procedures, regulations.
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable federal and state health and safety regulations and ensures necessary records are maintained and prepared according to established guidelines.
  • Study EM 385-1-1 and OSHA 1910/1926 to get a good understanding of the laws required to do the job in an efficient manner
  • Participates in Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) inspections, providing inspectors with appropriate documents and identifying safety measures.
  • Participate in emergency response procedures and drills to ensure readiness for potential emergencies or accidents on the construction site.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • No prior experience or training.
  • Currently pursuing a degree in Occupational Health & Safety or a related field
  • Strong academic performance in relevant coursework, including Safety Management, Ergonomics or Industrial Hygiene
  • Basic Computer skills.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and adapt to changing project requirements.
  • Associate's Degree (AA) in progress
  • Certificates, licenses and registrations required: None
