Job Summary
General Atomics (GA), and its affiliated companies, is one of the world's leading resources for high-technology systems development ranging from the nuclear fuel cycle to remotely piloted aircraft, airborne sensors, and advanced electric, electronic, wireless and laser technologies.
We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Computer Software Manager within GA's Energy Group. This position is responsible for managing and coordinating computer software development activities to ensure state-of-the-art, reliable and efficient performance in support of fusion research activities, including the preparation of multi-year plans, budgets, schedules, and progress reports.
The work location is at the San Diego location and will include close coordination with activities located at various fusion research facilities in the US and abroad. This will also include the development of computer software solutions for other applications outside of fusion.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Design and develop applications, infrastructure and services under a Linux computing environment.
  • Responsible for unit testing, integration testing, software maintenance, and documentation and meeting software quality and compliance standards
  • Provides leadership for the design, implementation, and managing of computer software development including planning and managing technical performance to ensure quality, business, and financial objectives are attained.
  • Identifies innovative software approaches and provides leadership in developing unique and novel solutions and ensures the development and implementation of long-term plans for this research.
  • Leads a team of computer scientists and participates in technical activities to achieve computer software research goals in magnetic and inertial fusion as well as other applicable scientific domains.
  • Develops and implements current, annual and long-term technical, schedule, and quality objectives for various customers.
  • Establishes design concepts, criteria, and computer science efforts for product research, development, testing, and integration, including software design reviews.
  • Interacts with management and customer representatives concerning projects, operational decisions, scheduling requirements and contractual clarification.
  • Ensures leadership and excellence is maintained by directing and participating in the planning, attraction, selection, retention, and development of the required management, professional, and technical talent.
  • Participates in the development of new business opportunities and expansion of existing business opportunities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Job Qualifications
  • Typically requires a bachelors degree in computer science, information technology or a related field and nine or more years of progressive information technology experience in a corporate environment. May substitute equivalent experience in lieu of education.
  • Typically requires at least five years having management responsibilities. May substitute equivalent experience in lieu of education.
  • Extensive experience in Linux based software development concepts, principles, and theory and demonstrate complete understanding and application of programming and analysis concepts.
  • Good knowledge of Web Services development and support.
  • Experience in Scientific Data Management Software and knowledge of Scientific Software for Data Acquisition, Analysis, and Visualization.
  • Demonstrates project management and leadership skills including organizing, planning, scheduling, and coordinating workloads to meet established deadlines or milestones.
  • Must possess the ability to resolve management and technical problems. Strong communication, leadership, presentation, and interpersonal skills are required to enable an effective interface with other departments, all levels of management, professional and support staff, customers, potential customers, and government representatives.
  • Highly capable to work and interact with scientists, engineers and managers from different institutions, nationally and internationally.
  • Customer focused, with experience in general software ticketing and end user support.
  • Must be able to work on a self-initiated basis and in a team environment, and able to work extended hours and travel as required
